The Best Small Towns in Northeast Texas to Visit

Jefferson was the largest inland port in Texas when steamboats came up Big Cypress Bayou from the Red River, and the growth that would have knocked the 1800s buildings down never arrived. What is left is a walkable historic district, an antique row on Austin Street, and a bed and breakfast trade big enough that the town markets itself as the bed and breakfast capital of Texas.

It is also the only town on this list with enough to do for two full days. A narrated hour up the bayou on the Turning Basin riverboat, a Friday or Saturday night ghost walk, the Jefferson Historical Museum, and Caddo Lake State Park about twenty minutes east.

Mineola's downtown went on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, and it is the rare small Texas main street that is not half empty. Antique malls, coffee, the Select Theater from 1920 that still runs first run movies alongside four Lake Country Playhouse productions a year, and a depot restored to its 1906 appearance that Amtrak's Texas Eagle still stops at twice a day on the Chicago to San Antonio run.

South of downtown, the Mineola Nature Preserve covers roughly 2,900 acres along the Sabine River with hiking and equestrian trails, a dozen or more ponds and serious bird watching. A full main street plus a large public preserve is what puts Mineola second, ahead of towns with bigger single attractions.

For four days a month Canton stops being a town of four thousand and becomes an open air market that pulls buyers from every state around it. The Canton Civic Center is the antiques building, the city run one where the rules actually require the merchandise to be old. The vendor fields west of it are where the volume is.

Two honest caveats. This is a timing town, and on the other twenty six days of the month Canton is a quiet county seat. And the privately run Old Mill Marketplace complex was sold and shut down in 2026, so part of the ground regular shoppers remember is no longer open.

Winnsboro is the arts town of Northeast Texas and that is not a stretch. The Winnsboro Center for the Arts anchors a state designated cultural arts district and runs an 88 seat listening room, the Bowery Stage, that books touring acts into a town this size.

Around it sit a downtown mural walk, a historical museum on Broadway, a Saturday farmers market, and Autumn Trails, an October long festival now past its sixtieth year that includes one of the larger antique car parades in this part of the country.

Mount Vernon's Main Street is the old Bankhead Highway, the first transcontinental route across the country. The square around the 1912 Classical Revival Franklin County courthouse got a serious rehabilitation that culminated in the courthouse rededication in late 2014, several historic buildings on the square came back with it, and dining followed.

The Franklin County Historical Association runs five museums here, among them the 1912 jail as an art museum, a native rock fire station built by the WPA in 1940 that now displays memorabilia from Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Mount Vernon native Don Meredith, and the 1894 Cotton Belt depot with working telegraphy.

Pittsburg is a food stop first. The Pittsburg Hot Link Restaurant on West Marshall Street sells the sausage the town is known for, by the link and by the dozen, and it is the reason most people outside Camp County have heard of the place at all.

Two blocks away, the Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum occupies a 1901 Cotton Belt depot alongside a separate farmstead site, with material reaching back to the town's founding in 1854. Pittsburg also built the first Carnegie library in Texas, on a $5,000 promise from Andrew Carnegie in 1899 that the city council matched. That building burned in 1939.

Gilmer's square still has its red brick streets, and for four days in the third week of October it disappears under the East Texas Yamboree. The festival started in 1935, after the quarantine that followed the sweet potato weevil lifted and the local yam market came back, and it now runs a carnival, two parades, livestock shows, a queen's coronation and a street dance.

Outside October the appeal is quieter. A courthouse square you can walk in twenty minutes, a few antique stores, and an easy detour off the drive between Longview and Mount Pleasant.

Quitman is the Wood County seat and the town where James Stephen Hogg, the first native born governor of Texas, lived as a young man. The roughly 27 acre park named for him, just south of downtown, holds the Ima Hogg Museum, the Honeymoon Cottage where Hogg and Sallie Stinson spent their honeymoon, and the Stinson House where the two were married in 1874. Ima Hogg bought and moved the houses there herself.

The state ran the site as Governor Hogg Shrine State Historical Park until it was sold to the city in 2007. The city added the Quitman Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, and there are campsites and RV pads on the same grounds.

This is the outdoor entry on the list. Daingerfield State Park covers roughly 500 acres around an 80 acre lake that the Civilian Conservation Corps impounded behind an earthen dam in the late 1930s. Company 2891 started the work and Company 1801, an all Black unit, finished it, replanting the native hardwoods that make the Rustling Leaves Trail worth walking in November.

The park rents kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and flat bottom boats, and it has cabins and a lodge as well as campsites. That is what makes it a destination rather than a picnic stop, and it is why Daingerfield earns a place on a list of towns.
