The Best Restaurants in Quitman, Texas

Seven Quitman restaurants checked against the Wood County Monitor, state licensing records, KLTV and each kitchen's own site, with addresses and phone numbers.

The Short Answer

Seth's Lake Fork Creek on Highway 37 is the best restaurant in Quitman, a Cajun and steak kitchen open since 2009 with the deepest review record in Wood County. Anconna is the best Italian in the area, and Red Dome Smokehouse on South Main is the only kitchen here open seven days.

Seth's Lake Fork Creek Steak and Seafood

South State Highway 37, just north of the Lake Fork Creek bridge · $$

Known for Cajun seafood and a ribeye that out of town fishermen drive back for

Seth Bowdoin has run this since 2009, on a hill between Mineola and Quitman just north of the Lake Fork Creek bridge, and KLTV profiled it as seafood and steaks served with southern hospitality. The cooking is Cajun leaning: crawfish, grilled shrimp, fried catfish and ribs alongside the steaks. It is the only restaurant in Wood County with a review record in the thousands, and the ratings sit high across every platform we checked.

Two practical notes. It is small and it fills up, and locals say go early rather than hoping. It is also BYOB, which is worth knowing before you plan a dinner around it. The restaurant publishes its own schedule through its ordering page, which almost nothing else in Quitman does.

Go-to order or tip: The published week is Tuesday to Saturday, with 4pm starts midweek and 11am on Friday and Saturday. A Sunday or Monday drive out here is a wasted one.

Hours
Tuesday through Saturday, evenings on the weekdays and from late morning on Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday

Anconna Italian Restaurant

South State Highway 37, south of town near County Road 2128 · $

Known for Chicken parmesan, lasagna and a kitchen that handles large tables well

The only Italian kitchen in Wood County and the second deepest review record in the county, roughly 4.7 across more than 350 public ratings on one platform and 4.5 across 46 on another. The dishes reviewers name are the ordinary benchmarks, spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna and chicken parmesan, and the consistent theme is that the food arrives hot and the specials are worth asking about. One reviewer describes a party of 21 handled without trouble, which in a town this size is the real test.

It is second rather than first because it is a quieter proposition than Seth's and because its own site would not load for us, so the hours below come from aggregators rather than from the restaurant. The address, the phone and the Monday closure are consistent everywhere.

Go-to order or tip: It is a few minutes south of the courthouse on Highway 37, not in town. Ring (903) 492-3059 and ask about the specials rather than ordering off the printed menu.

Hours
Closed Monday. Open from late morning into the evening the rest of the week, with a slightly earlier Sunday close

Red Dome Smokehouse

South Main Street, south of the courthouse square · $

Known for Smoked meats, large portions and a 6.30am breakfast seven days a week

The only restaurant in Quitman that publishes its own hours on its own website, and the only one open seven days. Breakfast is served 6.30am to 10.30am daily, the kitchen runs through to about 8pm most evenings, Friday goes a little later and Sunday closes at 3pm. For a town of 2,000 people that schedule is the single most useful thing on this page.

We are ranking it third on availability and breadth, not on cooking, and we will be straight about the reviews. Across platforms it sits between 3.5 and 4.4, with the praise going to portion size and value and the complaints going to breakfast that has sat too long and a sense that it was better a few years ago. The site also warns that seating may be restricted because of staffing.

Go-to order or tip: Come for breakfast rather than dinner. The 6.30am open is the point of this place, and the reviews that complain are mostly about food held past the rush.

Hours
Seven days. Breakfast runs 6.30am to 10.30am, then lunch and dinner to around 8pm, with a shorter Sunday

Peralta's Authentic Mexican Restaurant

South Main Street, a few blocks south of the square · $

Known for Sit down Tex-Mex, with chile rellenos the order reviewers keep naming

Quitman's Mexican restaurant, and a business visibly investing in the town. The Wood County Monitor reported a groundbreaking on South Main in February 2025 for a new building going up next to the current one, with the existing restaurant staying open through construction, and there is a matching 2025 accessibility project filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation at 607 South Main Street. A company breaking ground on a new building is not a company about to close.

It ranks fourth because we could not find a published schedule for it on any platform, and because construction next door makes any schedule we did find less trustworthy. A separate Peralta's in Winnsboro, 15 miles north, is a different restaurant under the same family name.

Go-to order or tip: Go in expecting a building site next door, and go at a conventional lunch or dinner hour. There is no published schedule and no listed phone to check one against.

Hours
No schedule and no public phone number are published anywhere we could find. Treat it as a lunch and dinner operation

Curly T's

FM 2088 east of town, about half a mile south of Eastpoint · $$

Known for Charcuterie, cheeses and sandwiches, which nothing else out here does

The oddest and most interesting kitchen in Wood County. The lunch menu is sandwiches, cheeses and charcuterie boards, listed as fusion and eclectic, in a town where the default is chicken fried steak. It takes bookings through OpenTable, which means somebody maintains the listing, and it carries about 4.6 from 35 diners there.

Two honest caveats. The published week is Friday to Sunday only, with dinner service finishing around 7.30pm, and it is out on FM 2088 rather than anywhere near the square. This is a planned destination, not a place you stumble into.

Go-to order or tip: Book it. The week is three days long, the dining room is small, and takeout is available on (903) 629-3140 if the tables are gone.

Hours
A short Friday to Sunday week, lunch from late morning and dinner finishing early evening

Honor Coffee Co

North Main Street, facing the east side of the Wood County Courthouse · $

Known for Espresso, pastries and the only table on the square worth sitting at

This opened as Speakeasy Coffeehouse, named for the 1920s building it occupies, with specialty drinks named after figures from the decade. Listings and a 2025 review now show it operating as Honor Coffee Co at the same address under new ownership, with reviewers saying the feel has not changed. The lattes and the muffins are what get named.

It is here because it is the only reason to sit down on the Quitman square, and because the square is the reason most visitors come. We have not found an official announcement of the name change, only third party listings and that review, so do not be surprised by whichever sign is over the door.

Go-to order or tip: It faces the courthouse and sits across from the Wood County Arboretum entrance, so it is the natural first or last stop on a walk around downtown.

Hours
Daytime, built around the square's trading hours. Listings conflict, so treat a late afternoon visit as a gamble

Milano's Pizza

South Main Street, on the commercial stretch · $

Known for A quick to-go pizza from a small East Texas chain rather than a national one

We are labelling this plainly. Milano's is a chain, but it is a genuinely East Texas one rather than a national brand, with branches in Grand Saline, Van, Edgewood, Bullard, Royse City, Mount Vernon, Waxahachie and a handful of other towns in this part of the state. It grew across neighbouring counties rather than franchising out of the region.

It is last on merit and it stays on the list on usefulness. Reviewers describe it as a fast to-go pizza stop, which is exactly what it is, and in a town where the best kitchens close Monday or run three day weeks, a pizza you can collect matters more than it would elsewhere.

Go-to order or tip: Use it as the fallback. If it is Monday, Anconna and Curly T's are shut and Seth's is shut, and this is one of very few things still cooking in Quitman.

Hours
Lunch into the evening. Nothing authoritative is published for this branch, so phone ahead

How did we pick these?

Quitman has no chamber dining directory and no city restaurant list, which made this harder than the usual small town. So we worked from harder evidence instead: the Wood County Monitor, state licensing filings, a KLTV news profile, and the two restaurants that publish their own hours on their own sites.

That last point did a lot of the ranking. In a town of about 2,000 people, a kitchen that maintains a website, an ordering page or a booking listing is telling you it intends to be open when it says it will. Seth's, Red Dome and Curly T's all do. Peralta's does not, but it broke ground on a new building in February 2025 according to the local paper, and a matching state accessibility filing confirms the South Main address, which is a stronger signal than any schedule.

What we cut. Country Kitchen on East Lane Street shows a healthy review record on one aggregator and nothing at all anywhere else, including no trace on a search of current sources, so we are not sending anyone there until we can confirm it is trading. Judge Hunt's BBQ and Catering at 417 South Main appears on a single directory with no hours, no phone and no menu. Rocking S and S Grill turns up on best-of lists for Quitman and we could find no Quitman business by that name at all, which is exactly the kind of listing that gets copied between aggregators without anybody checking. Lakeview Tacos is the same story.

No restaurant on this list is a client of Hello Web Designs and none paid anything for its place. All seven are editorial picks, and the one chain among them is labelled as a chain inside its own entry.

What should you know before you go?

The weeks are short here. That is the whole practical story of eating in Quitman. The best food in the county is closed two days, the Italian place is closed another, and the most interesting kitchen runs three days. Check the day before you check the menu.

Restaurant Price Best for Days open
Seth's Lake Fork Creek $$ Cajun seafood and steak Tuesday to Saturday
Anconna $ Italian, and large tables Tuesday to Sunday
Red Dome Smokehouse $ Breakfast from 6.30am, and smoked meats Seven days
Peralta's $ Sit down Tex-Mex Unpublished, call
Curly T's $$ Charcuterie and sandwiches Friday to Sunday
Honor Coffee Co $ Coffee on the square Daytime, varies
Milano's Pizza $ A pizza to collect Most days

The geography splits three ways. South Main Street running out of the square carries Red Dome, Peralta's and Milano's within a few blocks of each other. Highway 37 south of town holds Anconna and, further along toward Mineola, Seth's. Honor Coffee is the only one of these actually on the square, facing the 1925 Wood County Courthouse, and Curly T's is out east on FM 2088 on its own.

Two of the seven are BYOB or dry in practice, and Seth's is explicitly BYOB according to local tips, so plan accordingly rather than assuming a bar.

Is Quitman worth a detour?

Yes, and mostly not for the food. Governor Jim Hogg City Park sits half a mile south of the courthouse and covers about 27 acres honouring the first native born governor of Texas, with the 1869 Stinson Home that Ima Hogg bought and moved there in 1969, the Honeymoon Cottage and a museum. The Wood County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is next to it at 100 Governor Hogg Parkway with about 23 acres of themed gardens and a walking trail. Stitchin' Heaven moved into 17,500 square feet on Richards Street and calls itself the largest quilt shop in the state.

And then there is the water. Lake Fork is five miles northwest and it is the most famous bass lake in Texas, holding the records for 34 of the state's 50 biggest largemouth. If you are here, that is probably why. We have written about it in our guide to the best lakes in Northeast Texas, and the rest of what we publish on the town collects on the Quitman city hub.

What should you do next?

If you have one dinner and it is not a Sunday or Monday, drive out to Seth's and get there early. If it is a Monday, Red Dome is open and nothing else good is. If you want the meal you cannot get anywhere else in Wood County, book Curly T's on a Friday.

Then widen the circle. Quitman's short weeks mean the honest answer is sometimes a 15 minute drive, and we have lists for both of the towns you would drive to: the best restaurants in Mineola 12 miles south and the best restaurants in Winnsboro 15 miles north. Frequently Asked Questions

Three things. It is the county seat of Wood County and the birthplace of the actress Sissy Spacek, whose name is on a stretch of College Street. Governor Jim Hogg City Park covers about 27 acres south of the courthouse and holds the Stinson Home, the Honeymoon Cottage and the Ima Hogg Museum. And Stitchin' Heaven on Richards Street bills itself as the largest quilt shop in Texas.

About five miles. Lake Fork sits northwest of town, covers roughly 27,000 acres with 315 miles of shoreline, and holds the records for 34 of the 50 largest largemouth bass ever caught in Texas. Seth's Lake Fork Creek takes its name from the creek the lake was built on and is the restaurant most fishing parties end up at.

Red Dome Smokehouse on South Main, which runs seven days and starts at 6.30am. Anconna is closed Monday, Seth's is closed Sunday and Monday, and Curly T's publishes a Friday to Sunday week only. Monday is the day the Quitman field narrows most.

Anconna, if the group is large. The reviews repeatedly mention big tables being handled well, including a party of 21. Seth's is the better food but it is a small room that fills up, and Curly T's seats fewer still. For anything over about ten people, call ahead whichever you pick.

Only Red Dome Smokehouse and Seth's publish their own. For everything else, the schedules you see on maps apps and delivery platforms are scraped snapshots, and several of them conflict with each other for the same day. We have described the pattern rather than printing a time wherever sources disagreed.

They are all within 20 miles and all have their own kitchens, which is worth knowing because Quitman's best restaurants keep short weeks. Mineola is 12 miles south on Highway 37, Winnsboro is 15 miles north, and Yantis sits on the far side of Lake Fork. We have published separate lists for Mineola and Winnsboro.
