How did we pick these?
We started with the two official lists, the Sulphur Springs Department of Tourism and the city's own visitor pages, then checked every entry against a second source that is not the attraction itself. Texas Parks and Wildlife supplied the facility counts at Cooper Lake and the Lake Fork record. KETR, the public radio station at Texas A&M Commerce, and Texas Monthly and KERA supplied the reporting on Heritage Park and the glass restrooms. UDisc and the PDGA confirmed the disc golf course at Coleman Park, which the tourism copy mentions in passing and which is easy to assume does not exist.
Nothing on this list is a partner or a client of ours. Sulphur Springs is a town where the best things to do are mostly public property, so there was nobody to disclose.
Two things got softened rather than stated. Heritage Park's admission and hours come back different depending on where you look, some sources saying free and others a few dollars per person, so the card tells you to call instead of guessing. The Southwest Dairy Museum turns up at both 1200 and 1210 Houston Street, and 1200 is the civic center next door, so we published 1210 and flagged the discrepancy. We left the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center off as a venue rather than an attraction, since what happens there is a rodeo or a trade show on a date, not something you can drop in on.
What should you know before you go?
Everything downtown is walkable and most of it is free. Everything outdoors is a drive. That split is the whole planning problem here.
| Stop | Drive from the square | Cost | Best for |
| Celebration Plaza | 0 minutes | Free | A one hour stop off I-30 |
| Southwest Dairy Museum | 3 minutes | Free | Weekday afternoons only |
| Buford Park | 3 minutes | Free | Kids under 12 |
| Coleman Park | 5 minutes | Free | A morning walk or disc golf |
| Heritage Park | 5 minutes | Call ahead | History, cash at the gate |
| Cooper Lake State Park | 15 minutes | Day use fee | A full afternoon |
| Lake Fork | 25 minutes | Guide or launch fee | A dawn start |
The weekday and weekend patterns run opposite each other. The Southwest Dairy Museum is a weekday place, open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed both weekend days. The Celebration Market is Saturday evening only and only in season. Phinessé Farms is closed Sunday and Monday, and opens at midday only on Friday and Saturday. If you have one day and it is a Sunday, plan on the parks and the lake rather than downtown.
Cooper Lake day passes sell out on summer weekends and the park turns cars away at the gate, so buy online first. Heritage Park takes cash only.
When is the best time of year to visit?
Two weekends carry the calendar. The Hopkins County Dairy Festival runs in June, with the parade leaving from Buford Park, an ice cream freeze off, and a hot air balloon rally and glow at Shannon Oaks Church. The World Champion Hopkins County Stew Contest lands on the fourth Saturday in October, when more than 150 four person teams cook stew in cast iron over open wood fires and a low ticket price lets you eat your way through the campsites. Both are worth building a trip around.
October is also the best weather for Coleman Park and the equestrian trail at Cooper Lake. February through April is when Lake Fork gives up its biggest bass. July and August are for the splash pad, the swimming beach at Heron Harbor and not much else outdoors before ten in the morning.
What should you do next?
If you have two hours, do the square, the restrooms and lunch. If you have a day, add the dairy museum in the morning and Cooper Lake in the afternoon. If you are here for a weekend in October, build it around the stew contest and book a room early, because the town does not have many.
For where to eat while you are downtown, our guide to the best restaurants in Sulphur Springs covers the square and the barbecue worth driving for. Everything else we have published on the town, including the trades you will want if you end up staying, is on the Sulphur Springs city page. For other towns in this part of the state, see the best things to do category and our guide to things to do in Paris, Texas, which is about an hour north.
