How did we pick these?
We drew a two hour radius around the Lamar County courthouse and threw out anything that was really an overnight. Then we cut every destination whose main attraction we could not confirm from an official source, which is why Broken Bow and Caddo Lake are not here and why nothing on this list is a chain attraction with a city page.
Ranking came down to one question: does the place pay back the drive? Bonham wins because 47 minutes buys you two nationally significant sites and a Civilian Conservation Corps park, none of which need a reservation. Hugo is second only because the elephants are gated behind an appointment. Clarksville is last because it is honestly a half day, not because there is anything wrong with it.
Every address and phone number here came from the operator or the agency that runs the site: the Texas Historical Commission, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Oklahoma Historical Society, TravelOK, the Upper Trinity Regional Water District, and the cities themselves. Drive times are from routing data and assume you do not stop.
No business on this list is a partner, a client, or a paid placement. Nothing was pre-filled and nothing was cut for a relationship, because none of these are the kind of business Hello Web Designs builds websites for.
One research note. The network we ran this from could not open individual business websites directly, so each place was confirmed from multiple independent published sources rather than by loading its own site. That is why hours below are described as patterns instead of exact opening times. Call ahead if your day depends on one door being unlocked.
What should you know before you go?
The day of the week matters more than the season here. State historic sites in Texas run Wednesday through Sunday. University and industry museums run Monday through Saturday or weekdays only. Small town squares empty out on Sunday. Get that wrong and you drive an hour to a locked building.
| Destination | Drive from Paris | Best day to go | Cost |
| Bonham | 39 mi, about 47 min | Saturday, when all three sites open | $6 at the Rayburn House, grounds free |
| Hugo, OK | 26 mi, about 31 min | Fri, Sat or Sun, by appointment | Tour fee, cemetery free |
| Sulphur Springs | 38 mi, about 52 min | Friday, to catch the dairy museum | Free |
| Ladonia Fossil Park | 33 mi, about 44 min | Any dry day after rain | Free |
| Cooper Lake State Park | 23 mi, about 28 min | Weekday, or reserve ahead | Day pass |
| Texarkana | 94 mi, about 1 hr 45 | Weekday for the post office lobby | Free to $$ |
| Denison | 63 mi, about 1 hr 15 | Wednesday to Sunday | $6 adult |
| Clarksville | 30 mi, about 37 min | First Saturday, Apr to Dec | Free |
Two practical things. Rural highways in this part of the state flood, and TX 71 near Cooper is a known offender after heavy rain, so check TxDOT before a wet morning. And gas up in Paris. Between Ladonia and Cooper you can go a long way without a station that is open.
What about the trips people ask for that did not make it?
Canton is about an hour and forty five, and it is only worth it on a First Monday weekend, which is the Thursday through Sunday before the first Monday of the month. We covered that separately. Tyler is a similar drive and a full day in the rose garden season. Jefferson and Caddo Lake, at roughly two hours, are better as a night away than a day out.
What should you do next?
Pick by the calendar, not by the map. If it is a Saturday, go to Bonham. If it is a Friday, go to Sulphur Springs and get ice cream at the dairy museum before four. If it rained Tuesday and today is Thursday, Ladonia. If you have never crossed the Red River, Hugo is 31 minutes and there is nothing else like it in a day's reach.
Start closer to home first. Our guide to things to do in Paris, Texas covers what is worth an afternoon without leaving Lamar County, and the Paris city guide collects every article we have published on the town. For where to go next, the best small towns in Northeast Texas ranks the region's downtowns, our Texarkana guide breaks that longer drive into a workable order, and the day trips section has the rest.
