How did we pick these?
Late night lists are the worst-sourced category in food writing, because the hours are the entire point and almost nobody checks them. Most of what ranks for this search in Houston is either a 2019 round-up still circulating or an aggregator printing whatever a crawler saw on a Saturday afternoon. Half the restaurants on those pages have either closed or pulled their late service.
So we worked from the hours out. We took every Houston restaurant we could find with a reputation for serving after midnight, opened its own website, and kept only the ones whose published schedule confirmed it. Six survived. That is fewer than you will find on any other page about this, and the difference is the ones we cut.
House of Pies is the hardest omission and the FAQ above explains it. Poppa Burger on North Main has been described as a 24 hour stand for years, but the current listings disagree with each other and its domain now redirects to a parking page, so we could not stand behind it. Tan Tan in Asiatown has a real late night reputation and three sources gave us three different closing times, none of them current. Those are good restaurants. We just could not tell you when they are open, and on this particular list that is the whole job.
No business here paid for a place and none is a Hello Web Designs client. The scaffolding script matched no partners for Houston restaurants, so this is a straight editorial ranking.
What should you know before you go?
The single most useful fact about late night eating in Houston is that two of the six are on the same block of Westheimer. If your plan goes wrong, walk two minutes rather than drive twenty.
| Place | Neighborhood | Latest close | Open after midnight on a Monday? | Price |
| Katz's Deli | Montrose | None, 24 hours | Yes | $$ |
| BB's Tex-Orleans | Montrose | 4 a.m. Thu to Sat | Yes, 3 a.m. | $$ |
| La Calle Tacos | Downtown | 3 a.m. Thu to Sat | Yes, 2 a.m. | $ |
| Cantina Barba | Near Northside | 3 a.m. Fri and Sat | Yes, 2 a.m. | $ |
| Frank's Pizza | Downtown | 3 a.m. Fri and Sat | No, closes 10 p.m. | $ |
| Mai's | Midtown | 3 a.m. Fri and Sat | No, closes 10 p.m. | $$ |
The split that matters is the one in the fourth column. Four of these keep genuinely late hours every night of the week. Two of them, Frank's and Mai's, are weekend-only propositions that close at ten the rest of the time, and both have long enough reputations that people turn up on a Tuesday out of habit and find the lights off.
Two smaller things. Cantina Barba does not publish a phone number on its site, so there is no way to check before you set off. And Mai's is closed all day Sunday, which is the one gap none of the others has.
Where does Houston rank for this?
Better than the rest of Texas, and the reason is concentration. Katz's and BB's are one block apart on Westheimer, which means the Montrose stretch between them functions as a single late night district rather than two isolated kitchens. Austin has more venues open late but they are scattered. Dallas has fewer: our list of the best restaurants in Dallas open on Sunday night found exactly one place in that city running past midnight on a Sunday.
For the rest of what to eat here, the Houston city guide collects everything we have published, and the best tacos in the Houston Heights covers the daytime version of the La Calle question. The restaurants section runs the same exercise in other Texas towns.
What should you do next?
If it is already late and you are deciding right now, go to Katz's. It is open, it will still be open in four hours, and the menu is big enough that six people who want different things can all be fed.
If you are planning a night rather than rescuing one, put BB's Tex-Orleans at the end of it on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Four in the morning is the latest a Houston kitchen will cook for you, and a shrimp po'boy at that hour is a better finish than anything else on this page.
