How did we pick these?
We worked from the two most current pieces of Heights food reporting we could find, both published in April 2026: Houstonia's best tacos in Houston list, and KPRC's Heights guide, which sent James Beard winning chef Chris Shepherd to pick three neighbourhood restaurants. Then we added Texas Monthly's 2026 statewide taqueria list, which carried four Houston entries, and checked every address against the business itself.
The checking changed the list. Houstonia's piece lists Tacos A Go Go's Heights location at 2912 White Oak Drive, but the restaurant moved to 1102 Yale Street in January 2026, so the printed address would have sent readers to an empty building. Tio Trompo, which Houstonia places at 316 Shepherd Drive, we could not verify at all: no site, no listing, nothing tying the business to that address. It is not on this list. Velvet Taco and Torchy's both have real Heights locations and both are chains with hundreds of outlets, which is not what anyone means by the best tacos in a neighbourhood.
We are also open about the hours. Three of the six entries publish no schedule we could trace to the business, and for Chilosos the only published hours we found date to 2021 and 2022. In those cases we describe the pattern and tell you to call, rather than printing a time we cannot stand behind.
None of these businesses has any relationship with us. We have never built a website for any of them, nobody paid for a placement, and the ranking reflects the research and nothing else.
Why is Chilosos ranked above the Texas Monthly pick?
Because of the title. Alturas Mexican Cafe has the better single credential by a distance: Texas Monthly's taco editor put it on a statewide list of 25 taquerias in 2026, and nothing else here comes close to that. But Alturas is on Airline Drive in 77009, which Texas Monthly and Houstonia both describe as near the Heights, and it opened in February 2026.
Chilosos is in the Heights, has been since 2007, and was picked by two independent April 2026 features in the same month. For an article titled best tacos in the Houston Heights, the place that is actually in the Heights and has nineteen years of evidence behind it goes first. If you are ranking by pure cooking credential rather than geography, flip the top two.
What should you know before you go?
The Heights taco problem is timing. Three of these six stop serving in the afternoon, which catches out anyone who assumes a taqueria is an evening option.
| Place | Where | Order this | When it is open |
| Chilosos Taco House | 701 E 20th St | Tacos on flour, then chilaquiles | Breakfast and lunch, closed Mon |
| Alturas Mexican Cafe | 2409 Airline Dr | Shredded chicken mole enmoladas | Morning through afternoon, Mon closed |
| Tacos A Go Go Heights | 1102 Yale St | Lamb barbacoa | 7 a.m. daily, to midnight Fri and Sat |
| Cantina Barba | 3701 N Main St | Late-night carne asada | 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., 3 a.m. Fri and Sat |
| La Chingada | 1402 Northwood St | Quesabirria | Hours unverified, weekday happy hour |
| Tacos Tierra Caliente | 1535 N Durham Dr | Truck tacos | Hours unverified at this site |
Geography is the other thing to plan. These are not four walkable blocks. East 20th, Yale, North Main, Northwood, Airline and North Durham spread across roughly three miles of the greater Heights, so this is a driving list. The tightest pair is Chilosos on East 20th and Tacos A Go Go on Yale, which are about a mile apart.
What should you do next?
Go to Chilosos on a weekday morning, order tacos on the flour tortillas, and see whether you agree with Chris Shepherd about them. That is a 20-minute decision and it settles the main question this article exists to answer.
Then pick your second trip by time of day rather than by ranking. Alturas if you want the cooking, Cantina Barba if you are out late, La Chingada on a weekday afternoon for the happy hour. For the rest of the city, our Houston guides collect what we have published, and the best tacos in Texas by city hub runs the same research in other towns, including the taquerias of Oak Cliff in Dallas and the breakfast tacos of East Austin.
