The Best Gulf Seafood in Galveston County

Eight Galveston County seafood rooms verified open in 2026 and ranked, from the boat to table kitchen on Pier 19 to the San Leon oyster bars locals drive for.

The Short Answer

Katie's Seafood House on Pier 19 is the best Gulf seafood in Galveston County, because the commercial fishing family that runs it owns the market next door. Off the island, San Leon is the real destination. Pier 6 for raw oysters, Gilhooley's for grilled ones, Topwater Grill for shrimp off the owners' own boats.

Katie's Seafood House

Pier 19, Galveston · $$

Known for Gulf fish landed by the family's own fishing operation and sold next door

This is the shortest supply chain in the county and the reason it takes the top spot. Buddy Guindon has run the family wholesale seafood business on Pier 19 for about four decades, and Katie's Seafood Market there now supplies grocers and restaurants across Texas. The restaurant sits immediately beside it and is fed from the same counter.

What that buys you is red snapper, grouper, flounder, oysters, shrimp and blue crab that came off local boats rather than a distributor's truck. Nobody else in Galveston County can make the same claim about where the fish came from, which is why we put an island room at the top of a list that is otherwise about the mainland.

Go-to order or tip: Ask what landed that morning instead of ordering off the printed list. The market a few doors down will pack fish to take home.

Hours
Open daily, roughly 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Listings disagree on the dinner cutoff, so call.

Pier 6 Seafood & Oyster House

San Leon, on Galveston Bay · $$$

Known for Raw oysters from the owners' own Galveston Bay leases

Pier 6 opened on November 5, 2020 and belongs to Raz Halili, a second generation oysterman whose parents founded Prestige Oysters in San Leon. Prestige now runs two processing plants and more than a hundred boats, and in 2019 it completed Marine Stewardship Council certification, which made it the first certified private oyster fishery in the country. The kitchen is run by chef Joe Cervantez, formerly of Brennan's of Houston.

The family has also put more than ten million dollars and roughly 400 million pounds of shell back into Texas reef restoration, including Rett Reef, a ten acre sanctuary reef off San Leon established in 2023. Order the raw oysters and you are eating the output of that work rather than a national distributor's box.

Go-to order or tip: The site does not post hours, so call before you drive out. Ask for the terrace rather than the dining room, and order oysters raw and grilled side by side.

Gilhooley's Restaurant & Oyster Bar

San Leon · $$

Known for Oysters Gilhooley, grilled over flame in the shell with butter and parmesan

Established in 1988 and still the single most argued about seafood room on Galveston Bay. It is a low tin building with a shaded yard, no children allowed, and one dish that people drive from Houston for. Texas Monthly has written up the grilled Oysters Gilhooley on its own.

Go knowing what it is. Reviews in 2026 swing hard in both directions, mostly on service rather than food, and published hours vary from one listing to the next. What does not change is the oysters and the fact that nowhere else looks or sounds like this.

Go-to order or tip: Nobody under 18 gets in, so plan the kids out of it. Call ahead, because posted closing times range from 9 to 10 p.m. depending on the source.

Topwater Grill

April Fool Point, San Leon · $$

Known for Shrimp and oysters off the owners' own boats, with the bay on three sides

Topwater opened on May 27, 1999 at the marina on April Fool Point, a spit of land that puts water on three sides of your table. The owners run their own shrimp and oyster boats, which is the whole pitch and a defensible one.

It is the easiest of the San Leon three to bring a group to. Big room, long hours, a bait house on the property that opens seasonally, and the kind of menu where the shrimp and oyster plates are the point and everything else is there for the one person at the table who does not eat seafood.

Go-to order or tip: Ask for a table on the water side. The sunset view across the bay is the reason to time dinner late rather than early.

Hours
Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m.

Stingaree Restaurant & Marina

Crystal Beach, Bolivar Peninsula · $$

Known for Upstairs bay views on the peninsula, plus a seafood market downstairs

Crystal Beach has one proper sit down seafood restaurant and this is it. Stingaree runs a dining room over the water with the DownUnder bar below it on a later schedule, and the plates to order are the Shrimp Lover's Platter and the Bolivar Boiler.

The marina also runs a seafood market on site, which matters if you are staying in a beach rental and would rather cook. Of everything on this list it is the one that most rewards making a day of the drive rather than a detour.

Go-to order or tip: Come from the island on the Galveston to Port Bolivar ferry, then head east on Highway 87. Check the kitchen hours first, because Monday and Tuesday are dark.

Hours
Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m., closed Monday and Tuesday

Marais

Benson's Bayou, Dickinson · $$$

Known for New Orleans cooking and prime steaks on a bayou deck

Marais opened in 2017 under owner Keith Lilley and is the one entry here you would put a jacket on for. Community Impact described the cooking as elegant New Orleans fare, drawing on French, Creole, African and Texan influence, and the menu runs prime steaks alongside Gulf seafood and Cajun plates.

It earns its place because the rest of this list is paper napkins and plastic cups. If you want Galveston County seafood cooked with a sauce that took a day to build, on a deck over Benson's Bayou, there is nothing else like it between Houston and the water.

Go-to order or tip: Sunday brunch is the easiest way in. Published schedules vary between listings and older coverage, so confirm the day you want before booking.

Hours
Closed Monday. Dinner Tuesday to Thursday, lunch and dinner Friday and Saturday, brunch and dinner Sunday.

Noah's Ark Restaurant & Bar

Bacliff, on Galveston Bay · $$

Known for Gulf oysters and shrimp po'boys under palapas at the water's edge

Fred and Beverly Lyttle opened this in 1999 to put food, drink and a bay view in one place, and Steve Tolhurst later bought into it. The palapa covered deck is the whole draw, with live music out there every weekend, from acoustic sets to full bands.

The kitchen is more capable than the setting suggests. Gulf oysters, shrimp po'boys and burgers off the grill carry the menu, and the seafood gumbo is built on a nearly black roux. It is also the earliest opener on this list, which makes it the one place you can eat before a morning on the water.

Go-to order or tip: Sit outside under the palapas and check the live music calendar on their site before picking a night.

Hours
Open daily from early morning, to 9 p.m. most nights and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Joe Lee's Seafood Kitchen

Marina Bay Drive, Kemah · $

Known for Large fried seafood platters at prices the Kemah Boardwalk does not offer

Kemah's boardwalk restaurants are corporate and priced for visitors. Joe Lee's is the local answer a few minutes away, a family owned kitchen that the official Bay Area Houston tourism directory credits with more than thirty years in the seafood trade.

The menu is fried, broiled, blackened and grilled seafood with gumbo, etouffee and chicken fried steak behind it, and the portions are the thing people mention first. Go when you want a full plate rather than a view.

Go-to order or tip: Their website is mid rebuild and posts no hours, so call before you go. Lunch is the better value.

How did we pick these?

We worked the county rather than the search results. Galveston County is the island plus a mainland strip of small bay towns, San Leon, Bacliff, Dickinson, Kemah, Texas City and League City, plus the Bolivar Peninsula on the far side of the ferry. Almost everything written about seafood here covers the island and stops. The mainland is where the oyster boats actually tie up, so that is where we spent the research.

Every address and phone number below came off the business's own website where one exists, then got checked against a second source that is not an aggregator: the Galveston Island and Bay Area Houston tourism directories, Community Impact's local reporting, Texas Highways, Houstonia and Texas Monthly. Where the sources disagreed on hours, which they did constantly, we described the pattern instead of inventing a time.

Three candidates did not survive. Hillman Shrimp & Oyster in Dickinson has deep family roots on the bayou and no current website we could find, and nothing we read confirmed it is operating today, so it is out until that changes. The Kemah Boardwalk restaurants are a corporate collection you can eat at in a dozen cities, so they lost their slot to Joe Lee's a few minutes away. And Pacific Seafood in San Leon came up repeatedly in review aggregators but not in anything we could verify independently.

No partners, clients or sponsored entries appear on this list. Nothing in our client file matched Houston or seafood, so nothing was pre-filled and nothing was cut for a relationship.

Which part of the county should you actually drive to?

San Leon, if you only make one trip. Three of our eight are inside that one unincorporated community of a few thousand people, which is about 40 miles from Houston, and all three are there for the same reason: this is where Galveston Bay oysters come out of the water. Pier 6 and Topwater both own their own harvest, which almost no restaurant anywhere can say.

For island dining, our longer guide to the best seafood in Galveston ranks ten rooms on the island itself, from Gaido's on the seawall to a cheap shrimp po'boy counter. This list carries one island pick and spends its other seven slots where nobody else is looking.

What should you know before you go?

Hours are the trap. Four of these eight either post no hours at all or have schedules that differ between every listing we checked. Call. It is a 40 minute drive from central Houston to most of them and considerably more to Crystal Beach.

Restaurant Town Closed What it is
Katie's Seafood House Galveston Open daily Boat to table dining room on Pier 19
Pier 6 San Leon Hours not posted, call Oyster house with a bay terrace
Gilhooley's San Leon Hours vary by source Adults only, grilled oysters
Topwater Grill San Leon Open daily Marina restaurant, owners' own boats
Stingaree Crystal Beach Monday and Tuesday Peninsula bay views, plus a market
Marais Dickinson Monday New Orleans cooking on the bayou
Noah's Ark Bacliff Open daily Palapa deck, weekend bands
Joe Lee's Kemah Hours not posted, call Cheap fried platters

Two practical notes. Gilhooley's does not admit anybody under 18, so a family trip means Topwater or Noah's Ark instead. And Crystal Beach is reached by ferry from the east end of Galveston Island, which can run an hour behind on a hot Saturday, so that is a planned day rather than a spontaneous one.

What should you do next?

Drive to San Leon on a weekday and do all three. Raw oysters on the terrace at Pier 6, grilled Oysters Gilhooley a few streets over, then shrimp at Topwater with the sun going down over the bay. It is a three mile loop and it is the best seafood afternoon in the Houston area.

If you have the island booked instead, go to Katie's and ask what came in that morning. And if you are working through the wider region, our guide to the best tacos in the Houston Heights and the rest of our Houston coverage pick up where the water ends, along with everything else filed under seafood.

Frequently Asked Questions

San Leon, and which room depends on how you like them. Pier 6 for raw, because the family that owns it harvests from its own Galveston Bay leases. Gilhooley's for grilled, because Oysters Gilhooley is the dish the town is known for. Topwater Grill if you want oysters and a long menu in one stop.

Winter. Texas Monthly has written that Gulf oysters from January through the end of March are the fattest and sweetest of the year. Summer oysters are still sold and still good, but if you are planning a trip specifically for them, aim at the first quarter.

Yes. Coverage going back years and travel write ups published in 2026 all say nobody under 18 is admitted. If you are travelling with children, Topwater Grill and Noah's Ark are the easy substitutes, both casual marina restaurants with room to spread out.

Two. Katie's Seafood Market sits a few doors from the restaurant on Pier 19 and will pack fish for the drive. Stingaree runs a seafood market at its marina in Crystal Beach, which is the practical option if you are staying in a Bolivar Peninsula rental with a kitchen.

Take the ferry from the east end of Galveston Island across to Port Bolivar, then drive east on Highway 87. Allow for a wait at the ferry landing on summer weekends and holidays, which is the part that catches first time visitors out.

Because Katie's genuinely is the best of them, and leaving it off to make a neater geographic point would be dishonest. The island has its own longer guide, so this list carries one island pick and spends the rest of its slots on San Leon, Bacliff, Dickinson, Kemah and the Bolivar Peninsula.
