How did we pick these?
There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries on this list. No business in clients.json runs a barbecue pit anywhere in Hunt County, so nothing was pre-filled and nothing was cut for a relationship. Every pick here is an editorial one.
The filter did most of the work before ranking did. A pit had to have an address that agreed across at least two independent records, a working phone or an active Facebook page updated in 2026, and public evidence that it is currently open. That second test is the whole reason this list is short.
Three names that show up on Greenville barbecue searches are closed. Johnson Street Smokehouse at 2810 Johnson Street, later renamed Smokehouse & Market, carries a closed marker on Yelp and the domain the business used no longer resolves in DNS. Caddo Smoke House Pit BBQ on Highway 380 shows as closed on Yelp as of July 2026. Tanner's Smokehouse BBQ on Highway 224 shows the same. Ernie's Pit Barbecue is not closed, but the pit was taken over in 2025 and now trades as Fire For The Lord BBQ at the same address, which is how it appears on this list.
Several regional and out-of-town names surface in Greenville barbecue results because the aggregators reach into a wider service area. Bodacious Bar-B-Q is in Tyler and Longview, not Greenville. Hutchins BBQ is in McKinney and Frisco. Smoke Sessions Barbecue is in Rockwall. Wood & Time Smokehouse is in Farmersville, twenty miles west in Collin County, and is a fine pit but is not in Hunt County. Slaughter's BBQ Oasis, which we have in our Sulphur Springs restaurants guide as a Texas Monthly Top 50 pit, is over in Hopkins County. None of them are on this list.
What should you know before you go?
Barbecue in Greenville is a lunch plan. Four of the six close by early evening or sell out, and the two chains on I-30 are what fills the gap after that.
| Pit | Location | Open days | Notes |
| Burns BBQ | Highway 34 | Wed to Sun | Sells out |
| Duncan BBQ | Lone Oak, US-69 | Thu to Sun | Lunch only, out of town |
| Fire For The Lord | Wesley St | Wed to Sat | Runs to 9 p.m. |
| Baker's Ribs | I-30 W, Caddo Mills exit | Tue to Sun | Opens 8 a.m. |
| Soulman's | I-30 E | Mon to Sun | Chain, full hours |
| RibCrib | I-30 E | Mon to Sun | Latest hours, chain |
Two of the six are chains, and we say so on the cards. Soulman's is a North Texas chain going back to the 1970s, and RibCrib was founded in Tulsa in 1992. Both earn their spot by being open when the independents are dark rather than by beating them on smoke.
The one you have to drive for is Duncan. It is in Lone Oak, twenty minutes south of Greenville on US-69, and it is closed Monday through Wednesday. Add both to the plan.
What about Fire For The Lord and the old Ernie's?
The same pit, the same building, a new operator and a new name since 2025. If you are searching for Ernie's Pit Barbecue and finding conflicting reviews and photos, that is because Yelp still carries the old listing while the current name in the chamber directory and on the current Facebook page is Fire For The Lord BBQ. Phone number and address are the same as they were.
What should you do next?
If you have one barbecue lunch in Greenville, go to Burns on Highway 34 before it sells out. If you are willing to drive, Duncan in Lone Oak is the destination Hunt County pit, and a weekend lunch there is the trip. If you need dinner after seven on a weeknight, Fire For The Lord runs late on Wesley Street, and if that is closed too, the two I-30 chains stay open.
