The Best Bed and Breakfasts in Fredericksburg, TX

U.S. News put Hoffman Haus at No. 1 in Fredericksburg in the first edition of its bed and breakfast rankings, and the reasons are structural rather than decorative. The property is a small village of restored buildings, cottages, suites and whole houses spread over about five acres of gardens and lawns, one block from the Main Street shops, so you get acreage and a two-minute walk at the same time. Sources count the accommodations at either 22 or 23, so treat it as just over twenty.

The breakfast is the signature. A chef prepares it, it goes into a picnic basket, and it is delivered to your door at 9 a.m. rather than served in a common room, which is the model most of the better Fredericksburg properties have now copied. There is a day spa cottage on the grounds for massages and facials.

Fredericksburg architect Edward Stein, who designed the Gillespie County Courthouse, built this brick bungalow as his own home in 1923. It was restored and opened as a bed and breakfast in 1991 and has stayed at five guest rooms since, three with claw-foot tubs and two fireplace suites with private entrances.

What makes it worth ranking this high is the breakfast. It is cooked in the house and served in the dining room in the morning, two courses at a table with the other guests, which is the original bed and breakfast arrangement and is now close to extinct in this town. If the delivered-basket model leaves you cold, this is the booking.

U.S. News ranks Cotton Gin Village second in Fredericksburg. There are fourteen units on the property, seven of them 1800s-era log cabins and seven newer rock and timber cottages, each with a wood-burning fireplace and a jacuzzi tub. It is adults only, which is the whole point for a lot of the people who book it.

It also has the best restaurant in town on site. Cabernet Grill sits in the same compound and runs the deepest all-Texas wine list in the state, so dinner is a walk across the grounds rather than a drive. A hot picnic basket breakfast comes to the cabin door in the morning.

Third on the U.S. News list, and the other property here where breakfast is a meal in a room rather than a basket on a porch. Five separate guest units sit across the drive from the original 1854 stone house, and the dining room in that house is where you eat in the morning.

The units have king beds, fireplaces and whirlpool tubs, and the draw is the open Hill Country view, which you do not get from anything inside the city limits. Sources give the acreage as either five and a half or ten and a half, so we are not stating a number.

Thirteen rooms split between a restored historic main house and seven purpose-built cottages under mature trees, ranked fourth in Fredericksburg by U.S. News. It traded for years as the Sugarberry Inn, changed hands in 2020, and was renamed and reworked after that.

The breakfast is the thing guests write about. A homemade buttermilk biscuit, small jars of jam, honey and whipped butter, and fresh orange juice, delivered early on vintage china and glassware that the hotel washes and reuses rather than throwing away. It is a smaller breakfast than the hot baskets elsewhere and a better one.

This is the property that spent decades as the Fredericksburg Herb Farm and now trades as Hill Country Herb Garden, fifth in the Fredericksburg U.S. News ranking. The best answer if Luckenbach is the reason you are coming. Eight rooms across eleven acres, half a mile from the dance hall, with a hot breakfast every morning and a swim spa on the property. The original 1850s log cabin was built on this site by the settlers who homesteaded it, and it now sleeps two couples, a king downstairs and a queen up.

The innkeepers also say they run a free support ministry on the same acreage for people rebuilding after incarceration, homelessness or disaster, which is not something any other property here is doing.

Sixteen suites looking over Town Creek, a block off Main, seventh in the Fredericksburg U.S. News ranking. It operated as The Lodge Above Town Creek before the rename, which is why some booking sites still file it under the old name.

An in-house chef makes the breakfast daily and it goes to the suite door in a basket, European-inspired and continental rather than hot. This is the one to book when you want the walk to Main Street and the creek and do not particularly care about acreage.

Built in 1880 and still showing the high ceilings and original hardwood floors, with six suites, each individually done and each with a kitchenette. Breakfast baskets are hand-delivered in the morning. Half a block to Main Street is as close as anything on this list gets.

It is a sister property to The Winchester Lodge under the same ownership, which explains the shared phone line. Small enough that six rooms go quickly, and the outdoor space, a fire pit, gardens and a shaded porch, does a lot of work for a property this size.
