The Short Answer

Maddox Residential and Commercial Services on South Bonner is the best HVAC company in Tyler, family run since 1937 and licensed for both HVAC and electrical work. Tyler Weathermakers on East Erwin is the Carrier factory authorised pick, and 903 HVAC on FM 14 is the strongest small shop for straightforward residential jobs.

Maddox Residential and Commercial Services

South Bonner Avenue, just north of downtown · $$

Known for The longest continuous family track record in Tyler, started in 1937

The Maddox family started this business in Tyler in 1937 as Maddox Air Conditioning and it is now in its third generation, which means it has installed and serviced essentially every system type that has existed in East Texas. It is a listed member of the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce at the same South Bonner address and phone number it publishes itself, which is a small thing that a surprising number of search results cannot clear.

What separates it is holding two state licences rather than one. TACLA21137C covers the HVAC work and TECL18026 covers the electrical, both regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, so a job that turns out to be a breaker or a wiring fault does not become a second contractor and a second trip charge. It also does commercial building automation, which almost nothing else this size in Tyler does.

Go-to order or tip: Ask for same day service before 1 p.m. if your system is down. That is the cutoff the company publishes for same day, and calling at four in the afternoon in August puts you on tomorrow's list.

Tyler Weathermakers

East Erwin Street · $$

Known for Carrier factory authorised dealer and one of the few local geothermal installers

Oliver Martin formed Tyler Weathermakers in 1966 and his son Larry Martin took over as president and owner in September 1976, which is 60 years of one family in one city. It has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 1985, holds Texas Class A licence TACLA1541C, and runs NATE certified technicians.

Two things make it the pick for a system replacement rather than a repair. It is a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer, which carries real warranty and training obligations rather than being a badge on a van. And it designs and installs geothermal systems, which almost nobody in East Texas does, so if you have acreage and are weighing a ground loop this is the first call rather than the fourth.

Go-to order or tip: Get the load calculation in writing before you sign for a replacement. A company that does system design work will produce one, and it is the document that tells you whether the tonnage being quoted is right.

East Texas Refrigeration

Old Troup Highway, south Tyler · $$

Known for Commercial refrigeration and ice machines alongside ordinary home HVAC

ETR has been running in Tyler since the late 1970s and has grown into one of the largest HVAC operations in the area. Its own site says 1977 and the chamber listing says 1978, so take the decade rather than the year. It appears in both the air conditioning and the heating contractor categories of the Tyler Area Chamber directory at the same Old Troup Highway address.

The reason to call ETR specifically is the commercial side. It sells and services refrigeration and ice machines as well as comfort cooling, so a restaurant, a clinic or a church with a walk in cooler and a rooftop unit can use one contractor for both. For a straightforward house it is a solid choice rather than a special one, and the 24 hour on call line is genuinely answered.

Go-to order or tip: If you run a small business in Tyler, put ETR on the wall rather than a residential only company. A failed walk in cooler at 9 p.m. is a different phone call from a failed thermostat.

Coy Dodd Air Conditioning

East Fifth Street · $$

Known for Free second opinions on another contractor's diagnosis

Coy Dodd has been serving Tyler homeowners and small businesses for more than 42 years, holds an A plus rating with the Better Business Bureau and has been accredited there since 1999, and is a listed member of both the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tyler Area Builders Association. For a shop this small, three independent listings is good coverage.

The useful thing it advertises is free estimates and free second opinions when another company has already told you what is wrong. In a trade where the gap between a $400 repair and a $9,000 replacement often comes down to one technician's judgement, a company willing to look at somebody else's diagnosis for nothing is worth knowing about before you need it.

Go-to order or tip: Use the second opinion offer. If you have been quoted a full system replacement on a unit under twelve years old, one more look costs you an hour and nothing else.

903 HVAC

FM 14, north Tyler toward Lindale · $$

Known for A woman owned family shop with 40 years behind it and licence TACLB 39819E

Larry and Karen Lacaze run this as a woman owned business with more than 40 years of family service behind it, out of a shop on FM 14 north of town. It holds Texas licence TACLB 39819E, is accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an A plus rating, and is an American Standard Customer Care Dealer.

The range is wider than the size suggests. Alongside the usual repairs and changeouts it does ductless mini splits, package units, blown in insulation, its own sheet metal fabrication, and mobile home systems, which is a real gap in the market because plenty of companies quietly decline manufactured housing. It also publishes discounts for veterans, first responders, healthcare workers and teachers.

Go-to order or tip: Ask about the insulation at the same visit as the HVAC quote. In a Tyler attic the insulation is often the cheaper half of the fix, and a company that does both will tell you which one to spend on first.

A/C Contractors

County Road 2347, with the main shop in Longview · $$

Known for HVAC, plumbing and generators from one company across two shops

Worth being plain about the geography. A/C Contractors was founded in 1982 and its main operation is at 3830 Gilmer Road in Longview, with a second shop at this County Road 2347 address in Tyler. It is a genuine two city company rather than a Longview business running an auto generated Tyler page, which is a distinction worth checking before you hire anyone off a search result.

The appeal is breadth. It covers air conditioning, heating, plumbing, water heaters, drain cleaning, indoor air quality, standby generators and chimney inspections across Gregg, Smith, Harrison and Rusk counties, with background checked technicians and up front pricing. For a house that needs two trades in the same week, that is one phone number instead of three.

Go-to order or tip: Confirm which shop is dispatching before you book a non emergency appointment. Tyler and Longview are 35 minutes apart and the answer changes how tight your arrival window really is.

Napps Cooling, Heating and Plumbing

Headquartered in Longview, serving Tyler and Smith County · $$

Known for A 1957 company with a 23,000 square foot shop and in house fabrication

Napps is listed here with its real address rather than a Tyler one, because it is a Longview company that serves Tyler rather than a Tyler company. Roy L. Napps founded it in 1957 and his son has run it since 1975. It holds combined HVAC and plumbing licence TACLA 72668C, runs NATE certified technicians, and is a Bryant Factory Authorized Dealer.

What you are buying with the drive time is capacity. The operation runs a 23,000 square foot facility with its own engineering and sheet metal fabrication, and it publishes Smith County and Tyler in its service area alongside Gregg, Harrison, Upshur, Rusk and Wood. For an awkward commercial job or custom ductwork that is a real advantage. For a Saturday capacitor failure in Tyler, call somebody closer.

Go-to order or tip: Best used for planned work rather than emergencies. A company 35 minutes away is a fine choice for a scheduled replacement and a poor one when the house is at 88 degrees.

Ace Air Conditioning

County Road 196, south of Tyler near Noonday · $$

Known for In house sheet metal and duct fabrication from a small Tyler shop

A family owned company working in Tyler since 2005, holding Texas licence TACLB24472E and serving Smith County and the surrounding communities including Chandler, Noonday, Flint, Whitehouse, New Chapel Hill and Swan. It is an authorised dealer for Heil and Carrier equipment.

The detail that matters is that it fabricates its own sheet metal and ductwork. A lot of poor cooling in older Tyler houses is a duct problem rather than an equipment problem, and a company that can build a transition or a return on its own bench will fix that properly instead of quoting you a bigger condenser.

Go-to order or tip: If one room in the house never cools, ask for a duct and airflow assessment rather than a unit quote. That is the question this shop is set up to answer.

John Spiller Heating and Air Conditioning

G E Drive, central Tyler · $$

Known for A small owner run Tyler shop with a long record and a real address

A compact, locally owned and operated shop on G E Drive, accredited by the Better Business Bureau and listed at this Tyler address in independent business directories. It does diagnostics, repair, maintenance, thermostats, air quality systems and new installations for homes across Tyler and East Texas, with a 24 hour emergency line behind weekday office hours.

We are not publishing a founding year for it, because the company's own site does not give one and the third party figures do not agree. What we can confirm is a fixed Tyler address, a working phone number, a BBB record and consistent listings, which is more than many of the results on the first page of a search for Tyler HVAC can show.

Go-to order or tip: Good choice for a straightforward repair or a maintenance visit on an existing system. For a whole system design, start with one of the larger shops above.

How did we pick these?

HVAC is the category where local search is least trustworthy, so the method here is mostly subtraction. Every company on this page had to clear three checks: its own website had to give a real Tyler area address or state its actual base honestly, the address and phone had to match an independent listing, and it had to show a Texas air conditioning licence number or an equivalent verifiable record such as a Better Business Bureau accreditation date.

The Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce member directory did most of the work, because a chamber listing is a thing a company pays for at a fixed address rather than a page it generates. We cross checked against the Better Business Bureau and, where we could, the manufacturers' own dealer directories.

Plenty got cut. Several companies ranking for Tyler searches turned out to be based in Athens, White Oak or further afield with no Tyler shop at all, and we removed them rather than list them with a borrowed address. One well reviewed company shares a name with an unrelated Indiana contractor whose site comes up first, which is a good illustration of why you should check the address before you dial. We also cut the lead generation directories entirely, since paying for placement is not the same as being good.

Two companies on the list are not Tyler companies and we have labelled them as such in their own entries. A/C Contractors runs its main shop in Longview with a real second location in Tyler. Napps is a Longview company that serves Smith County, and we have published its Longview address rather than dress it up. No company on this page is a client of Hello Web Designs, nothing here is sponsored, and the ranking is purely editorial.

What should you know before you call?

The single most useful thing to understand about HVAC in East Texas is that pricing and availability are seasonal in a way that most trades are not. From late June to the end of August every company in Smith County is running emergency calls and your non urgent job waits.

Company Based Since Best for
Maddox Tyler 1937 HVAC plus electrical under one licence holder
Tyler Weathermakers Tyler 1966 System replacement, design work, geothermal
East Texas Refrigeration Tyler Late 1970s Small business, refrigeration, ice machines
Coy Dodd Tyler 40 plus years A free second opinion on a big quote
903 HVAC Tyler 40 plus years Residential repairs, ducts, mobile homes
A/C Contractors Longview and Tyler 1982 HVAC plus plumbing and generators
Napps Longview 1957 Planned commercial work and custom ductwork
Ace Air Conditioning Tyler 2005 Duct and airflow problems in older houses
John Spiller Tyler Not published Straightforward repairs and maintenance

Three questions worth asking on every call. What is the diagnostic fee and does it come off the repair if you go ahead. Is the technician who comes out an employee or a subcontractor. And if the answer is replacement, will you do a load calculation rather than matching the tonnage of the unit already there, because the old one may have been wrong from the day it went in.

What should you do next?

If your system is down today, call Maddox and ask for same day before 1 p.m., then work down the Tyler based entries. If you are planning a replacement for next spring, get three quotes with written load calculations, starting with Tyler Weathermakers. If you have already been quoted a full replacement and it feels high, take Coy Dodd up on the free second opinion before you sign anything.

From here, the best roofers in Tyler applies the same licence and address checks to the other trade most likely to turn up at your door after a storm, and you can browse every HVAC company we have researched or the rest of our Tyler coverage. Frequently Asked Questions

Texas requires an air conditioning and refrigeration contractor licence, which looks like TACLA or TACLB followed by numbers, issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Ask for the number and search it on the TDLR site. Every company on this page publishes one or holds a chamber listing that matches its own address.

Because service area pages rank. Several companies with no Tyler shop publish pages targeting Tyler, and a few lead generation sites list companies that simply pay to appear. We checked each company against its own site, the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce directory and the Better Business Bureau, and where a company is based elsewhere we say so in its entry.

The usual thresholds are age over about 15 years, a failed compressor, a refrigerant leak in the evaporator coil, or a repair quote approaching a third of replacement cost. Below that, repair is normally the better value. If you are being told to replace a unit under twelve years old, get a second opinion first.

Spring and autumn. East Texas summers put every company on emergency rotation from late June through August, and scheduled work gets pushed. Booking a maintenance visit or a planned replacement in March, April, October or November gets you shorter lead times and a technician who is not on his ninth call.

Most of them publish some form of after hours or 24 hour line, including Maddox, East Texas Refrigeration, A/C Contractors, Napps, Ace and John Spiller. The rate after hours is normally higher, so if the house is habitable it is usually cheaper to wait for the morning.

903 HVAC on FM 14 publishes mobile home HVAC as a specific service, which is useful because plenty of companies decline that work without saying so on the phone. Ask the question directly when you call anywhere else.
