The Best Breakfast in Tyler, Texas

The Diner has traded at the same South Broadway address since 2007 and does the one thing most of this list does not, a full breakfast every single morning including Sunday. The kitchen cooks from scratch rather than off a freezer line, and the menu stays in East Texas home cooking territory.

Its Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce member listing files it as a veteran owned business under owner Lloyd Nichols. That combination, an independent kitchen with a checkable local record and no closed day, is why it leads the list.

Mama's runs an American diner breakfast and a Mexican one off the same menu, all day, which is rare in Tyler. Pancakes and French toast sit next to omelettes built like plate lunches, and the portions are the reason people put up with the wait.

There are two of them. The original is on East Fifth Street. Mama's Restaurant #2 is at 7484 S Broadway Ave, (903) 630-6636, which is the easier one to reach from the south side. Listings disagree on the exact closing times at both, so call if you are cutting it fine.

This is the best single breakfast item in Tyler and the shortest window to get it. Stanley's runs a small morning menu off the same pits that made it a repeat Texas Monthly Top 50 pick, and in 2021 the Tyler Morning Telegraph reported it as the lone East Texas joint on that list.

Nick and Jen Pencis took the business over in 2006 after founder J.D. Stanley died. Sources put the original opening at either 1958 or 1960, so treat the exact year as unsettled, but the neon sign out front is settled enough that CBS19 reported the city designating it a historic landmark.

Manny's has been open since 2018 and cooks, by its own account, the recipes Tyler remembers from Gilbert's El Charro. Breakfast is the newer half of the business, added after the dinner trade was established, and the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce announced the launch on its own page.

The 6 a.m. weekday start makes it one of the few sit down options in Tyler that works before a job site or a shift at the hospital. Sunday is the exception, when the doors do not open until 10.

Co-owners Patrick Gene Riggs and Kong Nuon run the earliest opening breakfast in this guide and the most inventive counter in it. The brisket kolache is the seller, and it can be built out with bacon, egg, cheese and jalapeno. There are taco kolaches and donut based breakfast sandwiches too.

CBS19 filmed its EATS Texas segment here and Visit Tyler carries the shop in its own listings, so this is not a case of a counter that only exists on delivery apps.

The Grove is the answer when breakfast is the occasion rather than the fuel. The kitchen sits on a historic farm property off Old Jacksonville Highway and runs a separate published brunch menu on Saturday and Sunday only, with plates like eggs benedict under a chipotle hollandaise.

It is the most expensive entry here by a distance and the only one where a reservation is worth making. It takes bookings through OpenTable.

Laurel & Pearl calls itself a Euro-Southern bakery and it is the only place in Tyler doing this kind of pastry work. Croissants, macarons, beignets and crepes sit alongside a small cafe menu of soups, sliders and chicken salad plates, so it holds up as a sit down breakfast and not just a bakery case.

The owners say they moved to East Texas in 2014, trained at Five Daughters Bakery in Franklin, Tennessee, and took croissant and macaron classes in Paris. That is their account rather than an independently checkable one, but the pastry on the counter backs it up.

The bread is the argument. Great Harvest mills whole grain Montana wheat on site and bakes through the morning, so a breakfast sandwich here is built on something made a few feet away rather than delivered frozen.

It is a franchise rather than a one off, which is why it sits here rather than higher, but the Tyler store is locally run and opens earlier on a weekday than most of the sit down restaurants in town.

This one is not in Tyler and we are saying so plainly. 4 Way Cafe sits at the FM 2493 and FM 346 junction in Flint, in Smith County but outside the city, and it ends up on Tyler breakfast lists constantly because half of south Tyler drives past it.

It is a small room with a long serving staff and a short menu, and the pancakes are what people come back for. Two closed days and a 2 p.m. finish make it the least convenient entry here, which is why it is last rather than because the food is worse.
