How did we pick these?
Every one of the six publishes its own address and hours on its own website, and we checked each one against a second source before it went on the list. That was the bar, and it is why this is a list of six rather than a list of fifteen.
The strongest sourcing sits at the top. The Dallas Observer covered Smoke Sessions twice, first as a food truck and then when the Highway 66 building opened, and WFAA put it in a piece on the barbecue joints worth driving to in Dallas Fort Worth. The Royse City Community Development Corporation interviewed Anvil Brewing's co-owner and published the firehouse story. The Royse City Herald-Banner reported Iron Plow's grand opening in February 2026 and the CDC wrote up the restaurant incubator that put Wells Burgers Express in its I-30 space. Arboledas and Texas Cafe Diner publish their own hours, and Arboledas has been a Rockwall Area Chamber member since 2013.
What we cut is the useful part. Sweetwater Grill on Highway 276 is almost certainly a good night out, with live music on Friday and Saturday and a dance floor, but it has no website of its own and the third party listings disagree about which days it is even open, including whether Wednesday is one of them, so we are not printing hours we cannot stand behind. Luigi's Italian Cafe at 220 East Main has a domain that serves an empty page and two different phone numbers in circulation. Los Pinos and The Well Coffee Lounge turn up in a city round up we could not load directly, and The Well's listed address is now Texas Cafe Diner's. Red Dirt Social keeps appearing in Royse City search results and is actually in Fate. Every chain on the Interstate 30 corridor is excluded on principle, including the Chick-fil-A that opened in July 2026 and the Chili's, Pizza Ranch and Waffle House in the pipeline, because a chain tells you nothing about Royse City.
No business on this list is a client of ours. Nothing in our client file matched Royse City and restaurants, so this is a straight editorial ranking with no partner placements to disclose.
What should you know before you go?
Royse City splits into two eating towns that do not overlap. Downtown is Main Street, four of these six, walkable, locally owned, and mostly built in the last three years. The Interstate 30 corridor is everything else, which is parking lots and national brands, plus the one genuine exception in Wells Burgers Express.
The week matters more than the distance. Monday is thin, Wednesday has a trap in it, and the back half of the week is when the town actually works.
| Restaurant | Where | Kind | Own site | Closed or short day |
| Smoke Sessions Barbecue | 307 W Hwy 66 | Barbecue | Yes, with hours | Monday is grill and bar only |
| The Anvil | 232 E Main St | Brewpub and full kitchen | Yes, with hours | Monday to Wednesday opens 4pm |
| Arboledas Mexican Grill | 138 E Main St | Mexican | Yes, with hours | Open seven days |
| Texas Cafe Diner | 103 E Main St | Diner, breakfast all day | Yes, with hours | Monday and Sunday close 3pm |
| Iron Plow | 105 W Main St | Sports bar with a kitchen | Yes, with hours | Closed Monday |
| Wells Burgers Express | 610 W I-30 | Smashburgers | Yes, with hours | Closed Sunday, Wednesday to 3pm |
Two practical notes. Smoke Sessions says on its own site that meats sell out, so treat a late afternoon arrival as a gamble rather than a plan. And an older Smoke Sessions address at 7126 FM 548 still circulates online from the years before the Highway 66 building, so set your directions to 307 West Highway 66 and ignore the rest.
Is Royse City worth the drive from Dallas?
For barbecue and one walkable block, yes. It is about 35 miles up Interstate 30, which is 40 minutes without traffic, and you can do Smoke Sessions at lunch and still have an afternoon on Main Street with the firehouse brewpub and a Tex-Mex room in sight of each other. Four of the six places on this list are on that one street, which is not something most towns of this size can say.
If you want more than one block, pair it with Rockwall ten miles west, which has the lake and a far deeper restaurant bench.
What should you do next?
Drive out on a Friday or a Saturday. Hit Smoke Sessions before 1pm while the brisket is still there, then park on Main Street and spend the afternoon between Arboledas, Texas Cafe Diner and The Anvil, and end up at Iron Plow when the game comes on. That is the whole town in an afternoon, and it costs you one parking space.
Then widen it out. The best restaurants in Rockwall covers the bigger town ten miles west, which is where Wells Cattle Co started, and the best restaurants in Terrell is 20 miles south on Highway 205. The Royse City city hub collects everything we publish here, and the best restaurants category has the same treatment for other Texas towns.
