The Best Barbecue in Nacogdoches, Texas

Six Nacogdoches barbecue joints ranked and verified, led by a Texas Monthly Top 50 pit on East Main whose brisket rub is half coffee grounds.

The Very Best of Texas Editors 4 min read How we rank →

The Short Answer

Brendyn's BBQ at 601 E Main St is the best barbecue in Nacogdoches and one of the East Texas pits on Texas Monthly's 2025 Top 50 list. Its brisket rub is at least half coffee grounds. Butcher Boy's on North Street is the pick if you also want a meat market, and CC's Smokehouse has the longest hours.

Brendyn's BBQ

East Main Street, just off downtown · $$

Known for A coffee-rubbed brisket that put Nacogdoches on the Texas Monthly Top 50

Texas Monthly named Brendyn's one of the Top 50 BBQ Joints in Texas in its 2025 edition, which is the single most meaningful thing anybody can say about a pit in this state and the reason this list has an obvious number one. Visit Nacogdoches announced it on 27 May 2025. Pitmaster Brendyn Todd started the business out of a trailer and now owns the East Main building it runs from.

The brisket is the reason. The rub is at least half coffee grounds, with the remainder equal parts coarse black pepper and kosher salt, and the meat goes into a reverse-flow smoker over oak. Everything is sliced and chopped to order at the counter rather than held. Beyond brisket, the Pig Apple pulled pork sandwich with slaw and green apple and the Garebear, a three-meat sandwich with a sweet and a Carolina sauce, are the sandwiches people drive in for, and the white cheddar mac and the jalapeno cream corn are the sides to take.

Go-to order or tip: Go Tuesday to Thursday if you can. It is closed Sunday and Monday, and the counter cuts to order, so the queue at Saturday lunch is the real one.

Butcher Boy's Smokehouse & Deli

North Street, north of the historic district · $$

Known for A barbecue counter attached to a working meat market, since 1977

Butcher Boy's has been on North Street since 1977 and has never moved or opened a second location. Billy and Cathy Huddleston founded it. Billy died on 30 June 2025, and Cathy now runs it with their granddaughter Macy Smith, which makes it the oldest continuously family-run smokehouse in the city.

What separates it from the pits is the market. There is a traditional meat counter selling fresh cuts including old-fashioned rind-on bacon, so you can buy raw and cook it yourself as well as eat chopped brisket and sausage off the barbecue side. The menu runs wider than barbecue too, with hand-cut ribeyes, chicken fried steak and burgers, and there are meringue pies by the slice or whole. It also publishes a student menu Monday to Wednesday, which is the SFA detail nobody else bothers with.

Go-to order or tip: Buy meat on the way out. The market is the reason locals treat this as a weekly stop rather than a lunch, and the pies go whole for less than most restaurants charge for four slices.

Hours
Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., closed Sunday

CC's Smokehouse

Westward Drive, west side · $

Known for Stuffed baked potatoes, house-made beef jerky and the latest close in town

CC's stays open 90 minutes later than Brendyn's and Butcher Boy's, which in a town where barbecue counters shut at seven makes it the default dinner option. It is a plates and sandwiches operation on the west side, and the city's own tourism listing names the three things it is known for, which are barbecue, stuffed taters and homemade beef jerky.

The jerky is the part worth planning around, because it is made on site and almost nothing else in Nacogdoches makes its own. The plate pricing is the lowest of the sit-down options here, with one, two and three meat plates and a sirloin at the top of the menu, and it carries a larger current review count than any barbecue business in the city except Brendyn's.

Go-to order or tip: Order a stuffed potato rather than a plate if you want the cheap full meal, and buy jerky for the drive. It is closed Sunday like almost everything else here.

Hours
Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8.30 p.m., closed Sunday

Mike's Barbecue House

South Street, on the way out toward Lufkin · $

Known for The only barbecue counter in Nacogdoches open on a Sunday

Mike's is the Sunday answer. Every other entry on this list is closed, and this one runs 11 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. seven days, which is both the longest week and the only weekend coverage in the city. It is run by Mike and Shannon McClellan on South Street, the road out toward Lufkin.

Its own description is specializing in heavy beef brisket, and it sells custom cooked meats by the pound and takes bulk orders, so it is the one to call for a family gathering rather than a competition plate. Review scores sit around 3.5, lower than anything above it here, and the complaints are about consistency rather than the pit, so we have ranked it on the strength of its availability and its by-the-pound trade rather than on the plate.

Go-to order or tip: This is the Sunday and the bulk-order option. Call ahead for meat by the pound rather than queuing for a plate.

Hours
Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 8.30 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Barbecue House

North Stallings Drive · $

Known for The oldest restaurant in town and a drive-through barbecue window

The Barbecue House claims the longest history of anything here and the only barbecue drive-through in Nacogdoches. Its own site says established 1959 and calls it the oldest restaurant in the city, while the Visit Nacogdoches listing credits 57 years of experience, so the two figures disagree by about a decade. Either way it predates every other pit on this list by a generation.

The menu is deliberately narrow, built on beef and sausage plates, and it does dine-in, take-out, the drive-through and catering. It is also the most divided entry here. Current public reviews run considerably lower than the rest of this list and the complaints are consistent enough that we have ranked it accordingly, but it is open, it is family run and the Sunday lunch window and the drive-through are things nothing else in town offers.

Go-to order or tip: Use the drive-through, which no other Nacogdoches barbecue business has, and the 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday window. Keep expectations at the price.

Hours
Monday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Chambers Smokehouse

Sundown Drive, with a truck that travels · $$

Known for Catering and a food truck rather than a counter you walk into

Chambers is the one to book rather than visit. It operates as a barbecue caterer out of Sundown Drive and runs a food truck to events, and it has catered as far afield as Gallery Furniture in Houston. The reviews that exist are strong on the brisket and the brisket quesadilla, and it has added a herb-crusted smoked prime rib to the catering menu, which nothing else in Nacogdoches offers.

We are ranking it last and we are not publishing hours, because it does not keep reliable walk-in ones. Its listings carry no confirmed schedule and the business has not claimed them, so treat this as a number to call for a party of thirty, not an address to drive to at lunch.

Go-to order or tip: Call before you drive. This is a catering and events operation, and the brisket quesadilla is what to ask for if the truck is somewhere you can reach it.

How did we pick these?

Nacogdoches is the rare East Texas town where the ranking is settled before you start. Texas Monthly put Brendyn's BBQ on its 2025 Top 50 list, Texas Monthly reviewed it at length, Visit Nacogdoches announced it and The East Texas Weekend went back this April and wrote it up again. When four sources that size agree, the job is not to be contrarian about number one. It is to tell you honestly what the other five are for.

So we worked from the city's own tourism directory, which lists every barbecue business in Nacogdoches with a phone number and hours, and checked each against its own website. Four of the six have one. The founding dates, the family names and the opening hours above come from those sites and from the Visit Nacogdoches listings rather than from a delivery app, and where the two disagree, as they do on how old The Barbecue House is, we have printed both figures.

We cut two names. Be Blessed BBQ has been written up before, including by The Texas Bucket List in 2022, but current listings put it at three different addresses with three different phone numbers, one platform flags it as possibly permanently closed and reviewers report finding the door shut during advertised hours. We will not send you there on that evidence. Dickey's Barbecue Pit on South Street is a chain, which is not a criticism, just a different kind of article.

Two of the six are honestly weaker than the top three and we have said so in their entries rather than writing around it. Mike's Barbecue House and The Barbecue House both carry review scores well below the rest of this list. They earn their places on things no competitor offers, which are Sunday service, by-the-pound trade and the only drive-through in town. No business on this list has any relationship with us.

What should you know before you go?

Nacogdoches barbecue closes early and it closes on Sunday. Three of these six are shut by 7 p.m. and four are closed all day Sunday, so the practical question in a town this size is not which pit is best but which one is open.

Joint Opens Closes Sunday Drive-through Meat by the pound
Brendyn's BBQ 11 a.m. 7 p.m. Closed, also Monday No Yes, by the pound
Butcher Boy's 10 a.m. 7 p.m. Closed No Yes, raw at the market
CC's Smokehouse 11 a.m. 8.30 p.m. Closed No Not listed
Mike's Barbecue House 11 a.m. 8.30 or 9 p.m. Open to 8.30 p.m. No Yes, cooked
The Barbecue House 11 a.m. 7 p.m. Open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Yes Not listed
Chambers Smokehouse Catering only Catering only Catering only No By arrangement

The Monday problem is the one that catches visitors. Brendyn's is closed Monday as well as Sunday, so if you drive to Nacogdoches on a Monday specifically for the Top 50 brisket you will find the door locked. CC's, Butcher Boy's, Mike's and The Barbecue House are all open Monday.

Geography is simple. Brendyn's is on East Main a short walk from the downtown brick streets and the Old Stone Fort, which makes it the one to build a day around. Butcher Boy's is north on North Street, CC's is west on Westward Drive, Mike's is south on South Street toward Lufkin and The Barbecue House is on North Stallings. All have free parking. None of the others is walkable from downtown.

What should you order at Brendyn's?

Brisket, sliced, and ask for it fatty. The coffee rub is the thing the pit is known for and the place to taste it is on a slice rather than inside a sandwich with two sauces competing. Then take a half pound of something else, because the counter cuts to order and the pork ribs are glazed rather than dry-rubbed, which is unusual in East Texas and worth trying once.

If you want a sandwich, the two with names are the ones. The Pig Apple pairs pulled pork with slaw and green apple, and the Garebear stacks brisket, pulled pork and sausage with pickle and onion and runs two sauces, a sweet and a Carolina. The sides to spend money on are the white cheddar mac and the jalapeno cream corn. Weekly specials bring in local chefs, brewers and bakers, and there is a pop-up breakfast taco service, so the board is worth reading before you order the obvious thing.

What should you do next?

Drive to 601 E Main St on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, order sliced brisket and a half pound of ribs, and walk it off in the historic district afterwards. That is a Texas Monthly Top 50 brisket and a 20-minute errand from the courthouse square.

Then do the one thing visitors never do, which is stop at Butcher Boy's on North Street and buy meat rather than order a plate. Our guide to restaurants in Nacogdoches covers the rest of the city's kitchens, the Nacogdoches city hub collects everything we have published about the oldest town in Texas, and the best barbecue in Texas hub compares Nacogdoches with the rest of the state, including Lufkin, 20 miles south.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, one. Brendyn's BBQ at 601 E Main St appears on Texas Monthly's Top 50 BBQ Joints in Texas for 2025, which Visit Nacogdoches announced on 27 May 2025. No other pit in the city is on the list, and Brendyn's is also the only one Texas Monthly has reviewed at length.

The rub. It is at least half coffee grounds, with the other half equal parts coarse black pepper and kosher salt, and the brisket smokes over oak in a reverse-flow pit. Texas Monthly's own review is titled around the smell of oak and coffee. Everything is sliced or chopped to order at the counter.

Mike's Barbecue House on South Street is open 11 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. on Sunday, and The Barbecue House on North Stallings runs a short 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. window. Brendyn's, Butcher Boy's and CC's Smokehouse are all closed Sunday, and Brendyn's is closed Monday as well.

Two do it differently. Butcher Boy's on North Street runs a traditional meat market alongside the restaurant, selling fresh cuts including rind-on bacon. Mike's Barbecue House sells custom cooked meats by the pound and takes bulk orders, which is smoked rather than raw.

One. The Barbecue House at 704 N Stallings Dr runs a drive-through as well as dine-in and take-out. No other barbecue business in the city has one, which is the main reason it is on this list.

Sunbird Barbecue at 415 N High St in Longview is on the same 2025 list, as is B4 Barbeque & Boba in Mabank, and KETK reported five East Texas joints in the fifty with three more as honorable mentions. Lufkin, 20 miles south of Nacogdoches, has none on the list.
