The Best Mexican Restaurants in Lufkin, Texas

Eight Lufkin Mexican restaurants ranked and verified, from a 500-seat Tex-Mex room that presses tortillas all day to a working tortilleria on Raguet Street.

The Very Best of Texas Editors 4 min read How we rank →

The Short Answer

Cafe Del Rio at 2301 S Medford Dr is the best Mexican restaurant in Lufkin, a 500-seat Tex-Mex room that presses tortillas through the day and runs to 11 p.m. at weekends. La Unica Tortilleria on North Raguet is the pick for the real thing, and Danny's Taqueria downtown is the best of the new arrivals.

Cafe Del Rio

South Medford Drive, by Highway 69 and Loop 287 · $$

Known for Tortillas pressed in house through the day, and the biggest Tex-Mex room in town

Cafe Del Rio is the one Lufkin Mexican restaurant that operates at scale without feeling like a chain. KTRE covered its move off First Street after 23 years in the city, a move that took it from roughly 300 seats to around 500, and it now runs three locations across East Texas and Mesquite. It is the only entry here that can seat a party of twenty on a Friday and still turn the table.

The detail that matters is the tortillas, which its own kitchen presses throughout the day rather than once in the morning. Beyond that, the enchiladas are built to order with a choice of queso, Tex-Mex chili or sour cream sauce, and the shrimp brochette, jumbo shrimp stuffed with Monterey Jack and jalapeno and wrapped in bacon, is the plate regulars bring visitors for. The restaurant says it has been voted Best of Lufkin every year since 2005, which is its own claim rather than one we could verify.

Go-to order or tip: Happy hour runs 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday at the horseshoe bar. The room books private events up to 70 people, so call ahead on a Friday.

Hours
Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

La Unica Tortilleria

North Raguet Street · $

Known for Tortillas and tamales from a tortilleria that is still a tortilleria

Nothing else in Lufkin is this close to the source. La Unica has been on North Raguet since 1978 and it still runs as a working tortilleria, so the tortillas on your plate and the ones in the bag you carry out are the same tortillas. You can eat in off a short menu of tacos, burritos and plates, or buy by the dozen on the way through.

Visit Lufkin, the city's own tourism office, puts it on the official self-guided Flavor Crawl as the dinner stop, and names the fajitadilla, a grilled quesadilla with cheese, beans and fajita beef or chicken, as the thing to order. The Lufkin Daily News has written the place up as much on the community it keeps as on the food. Prices are the lowest of anything ranked here.

Go-to order or tip: Buy a dozen tamales to take home while you are there, because they go. There is a quicker offshoot, La Unica Express, at 200 N Timberland Dr if you are in a hurry.

Herraduras Mexican Fire & Grill

South John Redditt Drive · $$

Known for Sizzling fajitas off the fire, and a full bar with happy hour

Herraduras has been the default sit-down Mexican restaurant on the west side of Lufkin since the mid 2010s, and the Lufkin Daily News has reviewed it. The room is built around the fajita platters, which arrive smoking, and reviewers come back to the same two words, tender and smoky. Portions are large even by East Texas standards.

It is a fuller operation than its neighbours, with fiesta platters, a bar menu and happy hour, catering and take-out alcohol. The one consistent knock in recent reviews is the wait at peak, with one December 2025 diner reporting about 21 minutes to be seated, so Friday at 7 p.m. is not the time to arrive hungry and in a hurry.

Go-to order or tip: Sit where you can see the plates leave the kitchen and order whatever is smoking. The seafood plates are the kitchen's other strong suit.

Hours
Open daily from 11 a.m., to 9 p.m. most nights and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Casa Morales Restaurant

South First Street, two blocks north of Timberland Drive · $$

Known for The oldest family kitchen in Lufkin Mexican food, and lunch specials

Casa Morales is the long-running family restaurant on South First, and it is the one your grandparents in Angelina County will name first. Sources differ on how long, with the Lufkin chamber of commerce listing saying 50 years and tracing the business to 1972 while an East Texas dining directory dates it to 1984, so treat the exact year loosely and the longevity as settled either way.

The chamber listing credits the menu to the kitchen's cook, who it calls Momma Juanita, and names the tableside salsa and the lunch specials as what the place is known for. There is a bar attached, Bocho's Cantina, for margaritas and cocktails. It is the only entry here that opens at 10 a.m., which makes it the early lunch option downtown.

Go-to order or tip: Go at lunch for the specials. It is closed Sunday, which catches people out, and the 10 a.m. open beats everything else in town by an hour.

Hours
Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., closed Sunday

Danny's Taqueria

Downtown, on East Lufkin Avenue · $

Known for Bistec tacos and the only late kitchen in downtown Lufkin

The newest thing on this list and the only reason to be in downtown Lufkin at 10 p.m. Danny's opened in spring 2026 on East Lufkin Avenue and runs to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, which is later than any other Mexican kitchen in the city. The menu is tight, which is the right instinct for a taqueria, and the bistec taco is the one reviewers name.

Beyond tacos there are tortas, quesadillas, loaded fries and loaded baked potatoes, plus a caramel flan and a Dubai chocolate dessert that tells you roughly when the place opened. The kitchen says it cooks family recipes. The unusual closing pattern, shut Thursday and Sunday, is worth checking before you drive down.

Go-to order or tip: It closes Thursday as well as Sunday, which is easy to get wrong. Friday and Saturday to 11 p.m. is the window nothing else in Lufkin covers.

Hours
Monday to Wednesday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., closed Thursday and Sunday

El Salto Jalisco Restaurant and Tequila Bar

North Timberland Drive · $

Known for A long seafood section alongside the standard menu, and breakfast from 6 a.m.

This is the Lufkin room that does Mexican seafood properly alongside the usual plates. It is a small, plain dining room on North Timberland with most of the classic menu plus a substantial mariscos section, and the Lufkin Daily News reviewed it for exactly that combination. Breakfast runs from early morning until 11 a.m.

One thing to know before you search for it. Current listings at 308 N Timberland Dr appear under two names, El Salto Jalisco Restaurant and Tequila Bar on delivery platforms and the regional dining directory, and Taqueria Jalisco Seafood on Yelp and in the newspaper review. It is the same address and the same room, so look for either.

Go-to order or tip: Come for breakfast or for the seafood, not for the standard combination plate. Published closing times vary by as much as two hours between listings.

Hours
Opens early for breakfast, around 6 or 7 a.m., and runs to the evening. Listings disagree on the close, so call first

Ostioneria Mi Tierra

North Timberland Drive, north of the Loop · $

Known for Cocteles, ceviche and mariscos, plus a 6 a.m. open seven days

An ostioneria is a Mexican oyster and seafood house, and this is the only one in Lufkin trading under that name. It has been on North Timberland since 2017 and the draw is the cold seafood, the cocteles de camaron and the ceviche, which no other kitchen on this list builds its menu around.

It also opens at 6 a.m. every day of the week, which is earlier than anything else here and makes it the breakfast option on the north side. The reviews are the most mixed of anything we kept, strong on the grilled chicken and the breakfast plates and weaker on consistency at the tail end of the day, so it is ranked here rather than higher for that reason.

Go-to order or tip: Order cold, not hot. The cocteles and ceviche are the reason to come, and the 6 a.m. open is the other one.

Skyline Burrito Bowls

North Timberland Drive · $

Known for Build-your-own bowls from a family kitchen, with a bakery attached

The honest description is fast casual rather than a restaurant, and we are ranking it last for that reason, but it is family owned, it is not a franchise, and it carries a bigger review count than most of the sit-down rooms above it. Bowls, burritos and tacos are built to order, there are gluten-free options, and the brisket is the protein regulars pick.

The part nobody expects is the bakery. The same family runs it inside the business and it is known locally for cupcakes and sopapilla cheesecake. The restaurant says it has been voted Lufkin's best burrito eleven years running, which is its own claim rather than one we could verify, and there is a second, smaller Express outlet at 1708 Deans Way.

Go-to order or tip: Order dessert from the bakery counter, not off the menu. It is closed Sunday and it is the only entry here you can be in and out of in ten minutes.

Hours
Monday to Friday 10.30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., closed Sunday

How did we pick these?

We worked from three sources that are accountable for what they publish, then checked every name against the business itself. Visit Lufkin, the city's tourism office, publishes a self-guided Flavor Crawl. The Lufkin and Angelina County chamber of commerce publishes a member directory with addresses and phone numbers. The regional dining directory at easttexas.com lists every Mexican restaurant in the city with an address and, for most, the year it opened, and it was last updated this month. Five of the eight above also have their own website, and the addresses, phone numbers and hours here come from those first.

That is a deeper bench than most East Texas towns of 35,000 can field. Nineteen Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants trade in Lufkin, so the work was cutting rather than finding. We dropped the chains, which means Casa Ole, Taco Casa, Taco Bueno, Taco Bell and the regional Tia Juanita's group. We dropped Lindo Mexico on South Timberland, which has the most interesting hours in town, open to 2 or 3 a.m. at weekends by some accounts, but review scores between 2.4 and 3.6 across four platforms that we could not square with a best-of list.

We also left out two names people search for. El Taurino and Mexico Express appear in older Lufkin coverage and in directory entries, and neither has a website, a phone listing we could confirm or an independent write-up, so we could not establish what either currently cooks or when it opens. Where sources disagree, as they do on Casa Morales's founding year and on closing times at El Salto Jalisco and Ostioneria Mi Tierra, we have said so in the listing rather than pick the tidier number. No business on this list has any relationship with us.

What should you know before you go?

Lufkin Mexican food runs along two roads. Timberland Drive carries four of these eight, which makes it the street to drive if you have not decided. Medford and John Redditt, out by the Loop, carry the two big sit-down rooms. Only Danny's is actually downtown.

Restaurant Opens Closes Sunday What it is
Cafe Del Rio 11 a.m. 10 or 11 p.m. Open Full Tex-Mex, 500 seats
La Unica Tortilleria Varies Early evening Varies Working tortilleria
Herraduras 11 a.m. 9 or 10 p.m. Open Full Tex-Mex and bar
Casa Morales 10 a.m. 9 or 10 p.m. Closed Family kitchen and cantina
Danny's Taqueria 11 a.m. 9 or 11 p.m. Closed Taqueria, also shut Thursday
El Salto Jalisco 6 or 7 a.m. Evening, varies Open Breakfast and mariscos
Ostioneria Mi Tierra 6 a.m. 8.30 to 10 p.m. Open Mexican seafood house
Skyline Burrito Bowls 10.30 a.m. 9 p.m. Closed Fast casual with a bakery

Two timing traps. Casa Morales and Skyline are closed Sunday, and Danny's is closed Thursday and Sunday both, so a Thursday-night taco run downtown will fail. And the early end of the day belongs to places most lists ignore. If you are up at six, Ostioneria Mi Tierra is open and so is El Salto Jalisco, and neither is a chain.

Parking is free and easy at every address here except the downtown one, where Danny's has street parking on East Lufkin Avenue that fills at lunch. Cafe Del Rio is the only entry that takes reservations, and the only one that can handle a group of twenty without notice.

What separates Lufkin from Nacogdoches and Longview?

Lufkin's advantage is depth at the cheap end. La Unica has run as a tortilleria since 1978 and there is a dedicated ostioneria, a dedicated taqueria downtown and a long mariscos menu on Timberland, which is more range than you get 20 miles north in Nacogdoches. The Nacogdoches restaurant guide shows a scene that leans harder on sit-down rooms and the college trade.

Longview, 90 miles north, has more Tex-Mex rooms and fewer tortillerias, which our Longview Mexican restaurant ranking lays out. If what you want is a dozen tamales and a bag of tortillas rather than a platter and a margarita, Lufkin is the better stop of the two.

What should you do next?

Do the cheap end first. Drive to 1614 N Raguet St, order a fajitadilla at La Unica, and buy a dozen tamales on the way out. That single stop tells you more about how Lufkin eats than any platter will, and it costs less than a sandwich.

Then pick your evening by the clock. Cafe Del Rio if you want the full room and a bar, Herraduras if you want fajitas off the fire, Danny's if it is Friday and late. Our ranked guide to restaurants in Lufkin covers the rest of the city's kitchens, the Lufkin city hub collects everything we have published here, and the best Mexican restaurants in Texas hub compares Lufkin with the rest of the state.

Frequently Asked Questions

La Unica Tortilleria at 1614 N Raguet St, which has operated as a working tortilleria since 1978 and sells tortillas by the bag as well as serving plates. Cafe Del Rio on South Medford presses its own through the day for the dining room but is not a retail tortilleria.

Two reliably. El Salto Jalisco at 308 N Timberland Dr serves breakfast from early morning until 11 a.m., and Ostioneria Mi Tierra at 1422 N Timberland Dr opens at 6 a.m. every day. Casa Morales opens at 10 a.m., which is early lunch rather than breakfast.

Danny's Taqueria downtown runs to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and Cafe Del Rio matches that at weekends and runs to 10 p.m. the rest of the week. Herraduras closes at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Almost everything else in town is shut by 9.

Cafe Del Rio, Herraduras and Ostioneria Mi Tierra open on Sunday. Casa Morales, Skyline Burrito Bowls and Danny's Taqueria are all closed, and Danny's is also closed on Thursday, which catches people out more often than the Sunday closure does.

Ostioneria Mi Tierra on North Timberland is the dedicated Mexican seafood house, built around cocteles de camaron and ceviche. El Salto Jalisco, further south on the same road, runs a long mariscos section alongside a standard menu. Cafe Del Rio's shrimp brochette is the pick if you want seafood in a full Tex-Mex room.

Casa Ole on South First is a Houston-based Tex-Mex chain location, Taco Casa is a Texas fast-food chain, and Taco Bell and Taco Bueno are national. Tia Juanita's Fish Camp on South Timberland is a regional Texas and Louisiana group. None of them is on this list, which covers independents only.
