The Best Restaurants in Henderson, Texas

The Bodacious name started in Longview in 1968, where Roland and Nancy Lindsey ran the original for fifty years until Roland died in 2018. It is not a franchise chain in the usual sense. The locations across East Texas are independently run under the same name, which is why the brisket in Henderson tastes like Henderson and not like a commissary.

In October 2025 the Henderson store carried the first place trophy out of the 13th annual Taste of Rusk County at the Expo Center, the United Way fundraiser where county kitchens compete for a People's Choice vote. It won on ribs. The everyday order is the chopped beef sandwich or a two meat plate, and the hot links hold up on a drive.

Locals still call it the Rusty Star, which is what it was for years before the current name went up. Same building on the Carthage highway, same all day breakfast, and it is one of the few kitchens in Rusk County open every day of the week from early morning.

The menu is country cooking done properly, chicken and dumplings, fried catfish, and pie made in house. If you are driving through Henderson at 6am and want something better than a drive-through, this is the one that is open.

This is the room Henderson fills on a Friday night. The kitchen fries catfish, shrimp and crawfish in season, runs all you can eat plates, and puts out fried green tomatoes and boudin balls that are the reason to order an appetizer you did not plan on.

It sits off the highway near Fair Park rather than downtown, which keeps the parking easy and the dining room bigger than most places in town. Cajun seasoning is offered rather than assumed, so say if you want it.

The Henderson News has posted that Herschel's was voted the Best Lunch in Rusk County, and the restaurant's own site leans on a long run of local best tea and best burger votes. Take the awards for what they are, a reader poll, but a town of thirteen thousand people voting the same lunch counter up year after year tells you something.

Herschel F. Witherspoon started the group in the 1970s and his son Richard runs it now, so this is a small East Texas family chain rather than a one off. Flapjacks in the morning, burgers at noon, chicken fried steak at night. There is a drive-through.

The most interesting food in Henderson is Salvadoran, cooked a block off the courthouse square. Pupusas are the reason to come, thick griddled masa pockets filled to order, served with curtido and salsa. The rest of the menu runs into Mexican plates, carne asada and breakfast, and it opens at 8am.

Nothing else in Rusk County is doing this. Henderson's tourism office lists it under local favorites, and it is the entry on this page most likely to surprise somebody who thinks a small East Texas town has three kinds of restaurant.

Tia Juanita's started in Beaumont and has spread across East Texas, so this is a chain and we are saying so. It earns the spot anyway because it is the most reliable night out in Henderson, a loud room with a full bar, crawfish and shrimp cooked Cajun, tacos and enchiladas cooked Mexican, and music on the calendar.

If the rest of this list skews toward lunch counters and fried catfish, this is where the group of six goes at 8pm on a Saturday and everybody finds something.

There is one sushi restaurant in Henderson and this is it, which would be faint praise if the fish were not decent. Rolls, nigiri and a hibachi grill in a town where the alternative is a forty minute drive to Longview or Tyler.

Lunch is the value, with bento and combination plates well under dinner prices. Note the Tuesday closure before you drive out, because it catches people.

Family owned and run, and one of the few places in town where you can get real street tacos without leaving the car. Chicken and steak tacos, cheese enchiladas, rice and beans, all priced for a working lunch.

It opens at 9am and stays open late on Friday, which fills a gap on East Main between the breakfast cafes and the highway sit down rooms.

A bar and grill sitting by Willow Lake, which is a better setting than Henderson has any right to expect on a highway frontage. Full bar, grill food, and it is explicitly kid and dog friendly, so it works for the crowd that wants a drink without leaving anybody at home.

This is a drinking room that serves food rather than a restaurant with a bar, and it is listed here on that basis. If you want dinner first and a longer evening after, it is the town's answer.
