The Best Restaurants in Gilmer, Texas

Six Gilmer restaurants verified against Texas Monthly, CBS19, the Longview News-Journal, the Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce and their own sites.

The Short Answer

East TX Rust BBQ at 227 West Tyler Street is the best restaurant in Gilmer, a post oak barbecue joint Texas Monthly carries in its barbecue listings. Doc's Hot Links on South Wood Street is the older institution, running since 1969 and now shipping its beef links nationwide, and La Finca on East Warren is the Tex-Mex answer.

East TX Rust BBQ

West Tyler Street, near the downtown square · $$

Known for Post oak brisket, house made sausage, and the Sibling Sandwich

Texas Monthly carries this one in its barbecue listings, which no other kitchen in Upshur County can say. Pitmaster Clyde Osborn cooks with post oak in an offset smoker, and the magazine's listing singles out the brisket and the house made sausages at prices it calls reasonable.

The sandwich is the signature. The Sibling Sandwich layers brisket, cheddar and slaw between slices of jalapeno cheese sourdough baked by a local bakery, which is the kind of detail that tells you a kitchen is paying attention. It is also a member of the Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce, so it is a confirmed going concern rather than a listing that outlived its business.

Go-to order or tip: It is a lunch operation, not a dinner one. Tuesday to Saturday and gone by late afternoon, so build the day around an early lunch rather than an evening plan.

Hours
Tuesday to Saturday, late morning to mid afternoon, roughly 11am to 5pm

Doc's Hot Links

South Wood Street · $

Known for Spicy East Texas beef hot links, the last hot link stand in Gilmer

Running since 1969, which makes it the oldest food business on this list by thirty years. CBS19 and the Longview News-Journal both covered the 50th anniversary in 2019, when more than 100 people turned up, and reported that Floyd Henderson ran it for 45 years before selling to Terry Capps and his daughter Mesha Capps. The business is named for Floyd Clarence Doc Henderson.

The product has not changed. Spicy beef hot links in the East Texas roadside style, plus a jalapeno and pepper jack version, and its own site makes the claim that matters, which is that it is the only hot link stand left in Gilmer. It now ships nationwide through Goldbelly, which is unusual for a counter this small.

Go-to order or tip: Friday and Saturday it closes at 6pm or when the links run out, whichever comes first. Go in the morning on a weekend.

Hours
Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 6pm or until sold out, closed Sunday

La Finca Mexican Restaurant

East Warren Street · $$

Known for Sit down Tex-Mex, and frijoles a la charra

The most substantial sit down restaurant in Gilmer, and one of the few here that runs its own website with its own menu rather than leaving it to a delivery app. It is a Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce member and the town's default answer for a full Tex-Mex dinner.

The kitchen describes itself as authentic and fresh with traditional Tex-Mex flavour, and frijoles a la charra is the dish it puts on its own front page. It is ranked third here rather than higher for one reason, which is that it does not publish its hours anywhere we could find, including on its own site.

Go-to order or tip: Call (903) 843-5355 before you drive, because the hours are the one thing nobody publishes. Everything else about this place is easy to confirm.

Hours
Does not publish a weekly schedule, so call before a late or early visit

Fetanetti's Italian Grill & Pizzeria

West Tyler Street · $$

Known for The only Italian kitchen in town, and lunch specials five days a week

Gilmer has one Italian restaurant and this is it. A Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce member, and the only kitchen on this list that publishes current prices anywhere, which makes it the easiest place in town to plan a budget around.

Cheese pizza runs 12 dollars and a specialty pizza 16, fettuccini alfredo with grilled chicken is 15, garlic bread with cheese is 6 and tiramisu is 7. Lunch specials run Sunday plus Tuesday through Friday. It sits two doors down from East TX Rust BBQ on the same street, which makes West Tyler the closest thing Gilmer has to a restaurant row.

Go-to order or tip: One older directory still lists La Carreta at this address. Fetanetti's own ordering page and the chamber both put Fetanetti's at 219 West Tyler, so use that.

Hours
Closed Monday, opens at 11am Tuesday, with lunch specials Sunday and Tuesday to Friday

Jucy's Hamburgers

US Highway 271 South · $

Known for Thin patty East Texas burgers, and the earliest opening on this list

Jucy's is an East Texas burger chain rather than a Gilmer original, with locations across Tyler, Longview and White Oak, and we are saying that plainly rather than passing it off as a local find. It earns a place because it is the Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce's burger listing, it is open early when nothing else in town is, and it is the most reliable quick meal here.

The format is the old Texas drive in burger, thin patties and a short menu, and the chain is expanding rather than contracting, with KLTV reporting a fourth Tyler location in June 2025. We rank it fifth because the chain connection means it tells you less about Gilmer than anything above it.

Go-to order or tip: Do not confuse this with the Jucy's at 3362 Gilmer Road, which is a Longview address on a road named for Gilmer, not a Gilmer location.

Hours
No published schedule we could confirm, though delivery listings show breakfast orders from early morning

Sushito's Asian Grill

Henderson Street · $$

Known for Sushi and hibachi in a town of about 5,000 people

The only Japanese kitchen in Upshur County, and the reason it is on this list is scarcity rather than acclaim. A town this size having a sushi counter at all is the point. It is a Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce member and still listed and taking orders at this address through 2026.

It ranks last because the sourcing is the thinnest here. One ordering platform lists the kitchen under a second name, Mario's Asian Grill, which may be a stale record or a change of operator, and we could not resolve which. We are reporting what we could confirm, which is the address and that it is trading, and nothing more.

Go-to order or tip: It runs a split day, open for lunch and then closed through the middle of the afternoon before reopening. Call ahead rather than turning up at 3pm.

Hours
A split service day, roughly late morning to early afternoon and then evening

How did we pick these?

Gilmer has about 5,000 people, so the honest number of restaurants worth naming is six. We started from the Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce's own member directory, because in a town this size a current chamber listing is the single best proof that a kitchen is still trading, and then we went looking for a second source on every name before it earned a place.

Two cleared the bar easily. Texas Monthly carries East TX Rust BBQ in its barbecue listings with the address, the phone number, the pitmaster's name and the signature sandwich. Doc's Hot Links has its own site, a 1969 founding date and 50th anniversary coverage from both CBS19 and the Longview News-Journal. La Finca and Fetanetti's run their own menus. The bottom two are where they are because the evidence behind them is thinner, and we have said so on each listing instead of hiding it.

What we cut is worth reading. Rowdy Creek Ranch Winery sits at or near the top of most aggregator lists for Gilmer, and its own website describes a vineyard with cabins, campers, cottages and event space and lists no food service whatsoever, so it does not belong in a restaurants article. Pressed Bistro is in the chamber directory and nowhere else at all, with no address, no menu and no listing we could open. Bodacious Barbecue is a chamber member, but we could not confirm a Gilmer street address for it and the Bodacious locations we could verify are in Longview, Kilgore and Tatum. Bubba's Fat Burgers is recommended all over the review sites and we could not find a Gilmer address for it from any source. Mary's Authentic Mexican on East Jefferson rests on a single vegetarian directory listing with no second source. Sothy's Kitchen on Chandler Street is a chamber member whose only address and hours come from a parking aggregator, and we could not even confirm what kind of food it serves. The chains, McDonald's, Whataburger, Subway, Chicken Express and Starbucks, are excluded on principle.

No business on this list is a client of ours. Nothing in our client file matched Gilmer and restaurants, so this is a straight editorial ranking with no partner placements to disclose.

What should you know before you go?

Gilmer is a lunch town. The best thing in it, East TX Rust BBQ, shuts in the middle of the afternoon, and the second best, Doc's, closes at five or six and sells out before that on a good day. If you drive here for dinner you are choosing between La Finca and Fetanetti's, which are both perfectly good and neither of which is the reason to come.

Hours are the real problem with this town, and the table below is honest about which ones we could actually confirm.

Restaurant Where Kind Published hours Best time to go
East TX Rust BBQ 227 W Tyler St Barbecue Yes, Tuesday to Saturday 11 to 5 Early lunch, Tuesday to Saturday
Doc's Hot Links 208 S Wood St Hot links counter Yes, on its own site Weekday or Saturday morning
La Finca 200 E Warren St Tex-Mex No, call first Dinner, after calling
Fetanetti's 219 W Tyler St Italian and pizza Partly, opens 11am Tuesday Weekday lunch special
Jucy's Hamburgers 317 US Hwy 271 S Burgers No Early morning
Sushito's Asian Grill 109 Henderson St Sushi and hibachi No, split day Lunch, after calling

One timing note that matters more than any of the above. The East Texas Yamboree runs in mid October every year, four days of parades, a carnival and a rodeo that the Marshall News Messenger describes as something local businesses and schools treat like a national holiday. Every kitchen in town is slammed that week. If you want to see Gilmer at full volume, go then. If you want a quiet lunch, do not.

What should you do next?

Make it an early lunch on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Start at East TX Rust BBQ on West Tyler and get the Sibling Sandwich, walk down to Doc's on South Wood and buy a few pounds of links to take home, and if you still have an appetite Fetanetti's is two doors from where you parked.

Then make a day of the county. Our guide to the best things to do in Gilmer covers the Historic Upshur Museum, the square and the Yamboree in more detail, and the best restaurants in Longview is 25 miles southeast on Highway 300 if you want a bigger dinner the same evening. The Gilmer city hub collects everything we publish here, and the best restaurants category has the same treatment for other Texas towns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beef hot links and the Yamboree. Doc's Hot Links has made spicy East Texas beef links on South Wood Street since 1969 and now ships them nationwide, and the East Texas Yamboree each October is the week when the town's kitchens are busiest. Gilmer also has a Texas Monthly listed barbecue joint in East TX Rust BBQ.

West Tyler Street. East TX Rust BBQ at 227 and Fetanetti's at 219 are on the same block, a short walk from the downtown square and the Historic Upshur Museum. La Finca is two streets over on East Warren and Doc's is on South Wood, so the whole list is within about half a mile.

Rowdy Creek Ranch on Highway 300 turns up at the top of several aggregator lists for Gilmer, but its own site describes a vineyard with cabins, campers and event space, and lists no food service at all. We left it off for that reason. Go for the wine and the lodging, not for dinner.

Both days are thin. Doc's is closed Sunday, East TX Rust BBQ runs Tuesday to Saturday and Fetanetti's is closed Monday. Fetanetti's does run a Sunday lunch special, and Jucy's is the most likely to be open on either day. Call before you make a plan around Sunday or Monday.

About 25 miles northwest of Longview on Highway 300 and roughly 30 miles north of Tyler on Highway 271, which makes it a half hour drive from either. Mineola is about 35 miles west and Pittsburg about 20 miles north.
