How did we pick these?
Gainesville is better documented than most towns its size, and the reason is a single local publication. The Cooke County Record runs a Gainesville dining guide that lists more than 30 restaurants by corridor, with addresses, phone numbers, descriptions and in several cases review counts, and it is maintained rather than abandoned: it names which places have closed and when. We read it directly. The Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce runs a live member directory with 19 restaurant entries, and the test for inclusion above was presence on both, plus an address we could pin down. Three of the nine also publish their own websites, and where those conflicted with a directory, the restaurant won.
The chamber directory is also a lesson in why you check addresses. Its restaurant category includes Kirby's Prime Steakhouse at 21444 World Way Drive in Thackerville, Oklahoma, which is a fine steakhouse and is in another state. Several other members are in Lindsay, Valley View, Garden Valley or Tyler rather than Gainesville. Dieter Brothers and Smokehouse BBQ in Lindsay and the Bluebonnet Cafe in Valley View are all real and all worth the short drive, and none of them belongs under a title that says Gainesville.
The cuts split into three kinds. Closed: Sarah's on the Square shut in early 2026 and The Fried Pie Co & Restaurant is gone after four decades, yet both still rank on syndicated best of lists, and Mendez and Down Range Eatery are marked closed on public listings. Single sourced: Cornerstone Cafe on West Main, Mi Casa, Fera's Italian, Saint Joe's Pizza, The Neu Ranch House and Rumpy's Little German Bakery all appear in the Cooke County Record and nowhere we could corroborate, so they are not here. Unresolvable: El Tapatio is on the chamber directory at 300 I-35 with one phone number and in the Record at two separate addresses with two more, and we will not publish a number that three sources contradict.
The chains went out as a matter of course. Chick-fil-A, Chili's, Cracker Barrel, Braum's, Wingstop, Dairy Queen, Domino's, Pizza Hut and RibCrib all trade here and none of them tells you anything about Gainesville. No business on this list is a client of ours. Nothing in our client file matched Gainesville and restaurants, so this is a straight editorial ranking.
What should you know before you go?
Gainesville eats in three places and they do not overlap. The courthouse square and the two blocks of North Commerce behind it hold the independents worth walking to. The Highway 82 corridor east of town carries Fuku, Trails Inn and the mid century roadside places. The I-35 frontage is almost entirely national chains, because the interstate traffic between Dallas and Oklahoma City pays for them.
The pattern to plan around is that the best kitchens here keep short, specific hours, and three of them close by mid afternoon. Sunday is the hardest day to eat well in this town.

Parking on the square is free and on street, and all four downtown entries plus Krootz are inside a five minute walk of the 1911 Cooke County Courthouse. The Highway 82 places need a car.
What should you do next?
Pick a Saturday. It is the only day you can get Goodies at 8am, Hungry Hippo at 11, Main Street Pub for lunch, Krootz brunch from 10, and The County Seat's $40 steak night in the evening, all without hitting a closed door. If you only have one meal in Gainesville, make it Krootz, and if you only have one order, make it the chicken fried steak at Wolf Den.
Then stay a while. Our guide to things to do in Gainesville covers the Frank Buck Zoo, the Morton Museum of Cooke County and the Santa Fe Depot, all within a few minutes of the square. The Gainesville city hub collects everything we have published about the town, and the best restaurants category has the same treatment for other Texas cities. If you are driving down I-35 rather than up it, the best restaurants in Denton is the next stop south and a much bigger field.
