The Best Moving Companies in Dallas

Seven Dallas moving companies ranked against the TxDMV and federal carrier registers, because an unlicensed mover is the single biggest risk in a Texas move.

The Short Answer

3 Men Movers is the first call for most Dallas moves. It has worked Texas since 1985, runs a yard on John W. Carpenter Freeway, charges one hourly rate with no stair, heavy item or fuel add-ons, and publishes a TxDMV number you can check in about a minute.

3 Men Movers

Northwest Dallas, off John W. Carpenter Freeway · $$

Known for An hourly rate with nothing bolted onto it afterwards

This is the Dallas mover with the longest checkable record and the clearest money story. Its own site dates the company to 1985 and credits the Fischer family, its Dallas page publishes TxDMV No. 000534796B, and the federal register lists 3 Men Movers Ltd as an active carrier authorised to haul household goods. The hourly rate covers the crew, the truck, blankets, straps and standard equipment, and the company states plainly that stairs, heavy items and fuel do not generate extra line items.

The trade-off is that the business is run from Houston, and the Dallas yard is a branch rather than a head office. That has not stopped it being the most transparent operator in the market on the thing people actually get burned on, which is the gap between the quote and the invoice.

Go-to order or tip: The hourly rate assumes a three mover minimum and a $25 deposit books the date. Ask what hour the clock starts, because travel time policy is where hourly movers differ most.

IMS Relocation

Carrollton, serving Dallas, Collin, Denton and Tarrant counties · $$$

Known for Specialty loads nobody else will quote

IMS has been working the Metroplex since 1991, was formerly Independent Moving & Storage, and is a Mayflower Transit agent, which is what gets a Dallas household onto a national van for a move out of state. It publishes TxDMV household goods certificate No. 005069032C and names Mike Lohner and Chris Moucka as owners.

Where it separates itself is the odd job. The service list runs through laboratory and medical moves, hospital and school moves, fine art, rigging and crating, trade show freight and auto transport. It is also a Certified Pinnacle Mover with the Southwest Movers Association, a Texas trade credential rather than a self-awarded badge.

Go-to order or tip: The USDOT number on its site, 125563, belongs to Mayflower Transit rather than to IMS. That is normal for a van line agent, but check the company itself by its TxDMV certificate number.

Firehouse Movers

Lewisville, covering Dallas and the northern suburbs · $$

Known for Firefighter crews and climate controlled storage

Founded in 1998 and firefighter owned, Firehouse is the longest running of the owner-operated outfits on this list and the one to call when the move needs a storage gap in the middle. It runs climate controlled storage for short or long holds, which matters in a Dallas August when a closing date slips, and it quotes pool tables and other specialty pieces as a normal part of the job.

It publishes TxDMV No. 000570404B. Note that the federal register lists it as a Texas intrastate carrier with no interstate for-hire authority, so read its long distance pages as Texas long distance, Houston and Austin and El Paso, rather than a move out of state.

Go-to order or tip: For a move out of Texas, ask them directly how the interstate leg is handled before you book, then call IMS or Armstrong instead if the answer is vague.

Armstrong Relocation

Carrollton, the Dallas agent for United Van Lines · $$$

Known for Interstate, international and corporate moves

If the move crosses a state line or an ocean, this is the Dallas end of a national network rather than a local crew improvising. Armstrong is the Dallas agent for United Van Lines, and the federal register lists A & B Transfer & Storage Company Inc, trading as Armstrong Relocation, as an active carrier, freight forwarder and broker of household goods, which is the full set of authorities an interstate household move actually uses.

The commercial side is the real depth here, covering office and laboratory moves, furniture and equipment installation, warehousing, and data centre logistics. Its own site dates the company to 1957 in one place and 1975 in another, so take the exact founding year as unsettled and the long record as the point.

Go-to order or tip: Employee relocation and small shipment programmes are separate products here. Say which one you are asking about or you will be quoted the full service rate by default.

Fantastic Moves

North Dallas, off Metric Drive · $$

Known for In-town Dallas moves, done by a small crew

This is the small, straightforward Dallas option. The legal entity is Lone Star Loaders Inc, trading as Fantastic Moves, and the federal register lists it as an active carrier authorised to haul household goods from the Metric Drive address. It publishes TxDMV No. 000521440B and says its founders learned the trade in a moving franchise starting in 1995 and have since completed more than 30,000 moves.

The menu is deliberately narrow, in-town moves, packing, internal moves inside a building, loading and unloading, plus Texas and out-of-state work. No storage, no logistics division, no junk removal.

Go-to order or tip: Internal moves, meaning shifting everything from one floor or wing to another, are listed as their own service. Worth asking about for a remodel rather than hiring general labour.

Evolution Moving Company

Two Dallas offices, Greenville Avenue and Deep Ellum · $$

Known for Labour only help and piano work

Evolution is the pick when you do not need a full service move. It quotes labour only jobs, loading or unloading a truck you have already rented, alongside piano and heavy item work, which most crews either refuse or price as a surprise. It runs two Dallas addresses, on Greenville Avenue and at 406 S Haskell Ave near Deep Ellum, plus Bedford and Fort Worth.

It is a Texas company rather than a Dallas one. Its own site dates it to 2013 and the federal register puts Evolution Moving LLC's physical address in Gruene, outside New Braunfels, with active authority to haul household goods. Dallas is a branch, and the promotional claims about its age circulating in press releases range from six years to fifteen, so ignore those and judge it on the licence and the crew.

Go-to order or tip: Labour only means your insurance, not theirs, covers the truck and the load. Fine for a short hop, a bad idea for anything fragile.

Around The Clock Moving & Storage

Mesquite, with a North Dallas office on Preston Road · $$

Known for Grandfather clocks, hot tubs and the east side of the county

The east and northeast edges of Dallas County, Mesquite, Garland, Rowlett and Rockwall, are badly served by movers based on the north side, and this is the crew that actually lives there. The federal register lists Around The Clock Moving & Storage Inc as active at the Mesquite address, and the company publishes TxDMV No. 009357688C and USDOT 1942102.

Its specialty list is unusually specific, pianos, antiques, grandfather clocks, hot tubs and statues, which is a better signal than a generic promise to handle fragile items. Its own site says over 20 years without naming a founding year.

Go-to order or tip: The Preston Road address is an office rather than a warehouse. For a storage-in-transit hold, ask where the goods physically sit.

How did we pick these?

We started from the only question that matters in this category and worked outwards from it: is this company legally allowed to move your house? Texas requires every household goods mover to hold a TxDMV certificate, and TxDMV says operating without one is illegal. So every company here publishes a TxDMV number on its own website, and every one was then checked by name in the federal SAFER carrier register, where all seven come back as active with no out-of-service order against them.

That check did most of the editing for us. It confirmed, for instance, that Fantastic Moves is legally Lone Star Loaders Inc at the Metric Drive address, that Evolution Moving's registered home is in Gruene rather than Dallas, and that Firehouse Movers holds Texas intrastate authority but no interstate for-hire authority, which changes what you should ask it to quote.

Two names that rank well locally were cut. Wildcat Movers is genuinely licensed and genuinely Dallas based, but its address appears three different ways across its own site, the federal register and two Better Business Bureau listings, and one review aggregator reports a BBB grade we could not confirm or refute. AB Moving publishes two different USDOT numbers and two different TxDMV numbers on its own website, attached to two different legal entities, Baker Relocation Inc and JMKB Relocating LLC. Neither is proof of anything wrong. Both mean a reader cannot do the one check we are telling them to do, so neither made the list. Daryl Flood Relocation was cut for a simpler reason: its domain now redirects to Suddath, so the brand a lot of Dallas search results still recommend is no longer the company you would be hiring.

No business on this page has any relationship with us. Nothing here is sponsored, and new-post.js matched no partners for Dallas and movers.

What should you know before you go?

The written proposal is the whole ballgame. TxDMV requires your mover to hand you one before loading, stating the maximum you could be required to pay, and it can be binding or not-to-exceed. Get that, the moving services contract, and the state's Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move in Texas brochure, all before a single box moves. If a crew turns up ready to load without them, that is not a paperwork lapse, it is the mover skipping a legal requirement.

The second thing worth knowing is that liability is not insurance. The default limit pays by weight, which means a 40 pound television is compensated like 40 pounds of books.

Company Base Best for Licence to check
3 Men Movers Dallas branch, Houston company Hourly moves with no add-ons TxDMV 000534796B
IMS Relocation Carrollton Labs, art, autos, out of state TxDMV 005069032C
Firehouse Movers Lewisville North suburbs plus storage TxDMV 000570404B
Armstrong Relocation Carrollton Interstate and commercial USDOT 449294
Fantastic Moves North Dallas Small in-town moves TxDMV 000521440B
Evolution Moving Dallas branch, Gruene company Labour only, pianos TxDMV 006779351C
Around The Clock Mesquite East side, specialty items TxDMV 009357688C

Timing is the other lever. Dallas moving demand spikes at month-end, when leases turn over, and across the summer, when crews work slowest because of the heat. A mid-month weekday between October and March buys you a better crew for less money.

What about apartments and high rises?

Most Dallas moves are apartment moves, and apartment buildings add two requirements that catch people out. Uptown, Downtown and Victory Park towers typically require an elevator reservation and a certificate of insurance naming the property before the crew is allowed on the loading dock, and those certificates can take a day or two to issue. Ask your mover for the COI the moment you book, not the night before, and confirm your building's dock hours, which often exclude evenings and Sundays. Movers who work towers regularly will ask you about this first. If yours does not, that tells you something.

What should you do next?

Get three written proposals, all for the same inventory, and compare the maximum figure rather than the hourly rate. Then spend one minute on each company in the TxDMV Truck Stop lookup. If a certificate is not active, stop there, whatever the quote says.

For most Dallas households, start with 3 Men Movers for the pricing clarity, and call IMS Relocation instead if the move leaves Texas or includes something unusual. More guides for the city are on our Dallas hub and in the moving companies category.

Moving usually means inheriting somebody else's deferred maintenance, so once the boxes are in, our Dallas roofers guide covers another trade where "licensed and insured" tells you almost nothing, and our Dallas HVAC guide is worth reading before the first August in a house you have not lived through a summer in yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every company that moves household goods inside Texas has to hold a TxDMV certificate, and operating without one is illegal. Ask for the certificate number and look it up in the TxDMV Truck Stop Motor Carrier Lookup. A licensed mover shows a status of Active. For a move across a state line, check the USDOT number in the federal SAFER system as well.

TxDMV requires three things before anything goes on the truck. A written proposal stating the maximum you could be required to pay, a moving services contract, and the state brochure called Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move in Texas. You also get a completed, signed copy of the contract at delivery. A mover who wants to start loading without those is already out of compliance.

Hourly suits short in-town moves where the variable is how long the crew takes. A binding or not-to-exceed written proposal suits long moves and full houses, because it caps your exposure. The failure mode to avoid is an hourly verbal estimate with no written maximum, which is what most invoice disputes are built on.

TxDMV lists unusually low prices, generic contact details, unmarked or rental trucks, and pressure to sign quickly. Texas also requires a mover to display its company name, TxDMV certificate number and USDOT number on both sides of the truck, so a blank truck on moving day is a real problem, not a detail.

Not in the way people assume. Liability limits are not insurance, and the standard limit pays out by weight rather than value, which is close to nothing for a television. Ask what the limit is, ask whether transit insurance is available, and check whether your renter or homeowner policy covers goods in transit before you buy anything extra.

Mid-month and mid-week, between October and March. Dallas demand peaks around month-end lease turnover and through the summer, which is also when crews are slowest because of the heat. If your dates are flexible, a Tuesday in February gets you a better crew at a better rate than a Saturday in July.
