The Best Restaurants in Conroe, Texas

Ten Conroe restaurants verified open in October 2026 and ranked, from the downtown tavern on Simonton Street to the catfish house that has fried since 1984.

The Very Best of Texas Editors 3 min read How we rank →

The Short Answer

The Red Brick Tavern on Simonton Street is the best restaurant in Conroe, the downtown anchor for upscale comfort food, brunch and live music. Conroux at the Hyatt Regency is the most ambitious kitchen in town. For the local institution, Vernon's Kuntry Katfish has been frying out on West Davis since 1984.

The Red Brick Tavern

Simonton Street, historic downtown · $$

Known for Upscale comfort food, wood-fired pizza, and the best brunch in Montgomery County

The restaurant that anchors downtown Conroe and the one we would send a visitor to first. It opens at 7 a.m. and runs through to late, which no other kitchen on this list attempts, and it covers the whole day without obviously phoning any of it in. Upscale comfort food, burgers, wood-fired pizza, craft beer on tap and a cocktail list that is made rather than poured.

Sunday brunch is the service that locals name, and it is a proper Southern spread rather than eggs and a mimosa. Chilaquiles, Texas poutine, breakfast tacos, and fried chicken with waffles, with gospel music playing. Live music runs most nights of the week. It sits in a red brick building on Simonton a block off North Main, within walking distance of the Crighton and Owen theatres, which makes it the obvious pre-show dinner.

Go-to order or tip: Book Sunday brunch. It is the busiest service in downtown Conroe and the gospel brunch tables go first.

Hours
Open daily from 7 a.m., later on Thursday through Saturday

Conroux

Grand Central Park, inside the Hyatt Regency Conroe · $$$

Known for Viet-Cajun cooking, done deliberately rather than as a novelty

The most ambitious kitchen in Conroe, and the only one with a career hotel chef running it. Conroux opened with the Hyatt Regency Conroe on May 25, 2023, part of the $107 million hotel and convention centre in Johnson Development's Grand Central Park off Interstate 45. Executive chef Christian Brady came from Grand Hyatt Washington D.C., Miraval Arizona and Hyatt Regency Scottsdale.

The menu crosses Texas Gulf Coast cooking with Vietnamese technique, which is the Viet-Cajun idea that Houston invented, and it is the only place in Montgomery County doing it at this level. Crawfish fritters, corn chowder, pork belly banh mi, steaks and Gulf seafood, on plates that change with the season. It is ranked second rather than first because it is a hotel restaurant in a new development rather than a room with roots in this town.

Go-to order or tip: Dinner is the reason to come and it does not run Sunday or Monday. Check before you drive out, because the lunch menu is a different and much shorter proposition.

Hours
Breakfast and lunch daily, dinner Tuesday through Saturday. No dinner service Sunday or Monday.

Vernon's Kuntry Katfish

West Davis Street, Highway 105 west of downtown · $$

Known for Fried catfish, and forty-two years of it

Vernon and Mary Bowers opened this in 1984 with ten tables and seating for forty, and it has grown into the restaurant Conroe takes out-of-town family to. The catfish is the whole point: cornmeal-crusted, fried hard, served with the country sides that go with it. Gulf shrimp, oysters and country plates fill out the rest of the menu.

It is out on Highway 105 west of downtown rather than in it, which is where a restaurant like this belongs and part of why it works. If you want to understand what Southeast Texas country cooking tastes like before the Houston suburbs reached Conroe, this is the place that still serves it.

Go-to order or tip: Go at an odd hour. The dining room fills on Friday and Saturday nights and the wait is real, with no bar to wait in.

Hours
Open daily for lunch and dinner, later on Friday and Saturday

MEZZE#1

Grand Central Park, off Interstate 45 · $$

Known for Homemade hummus and babaghanouj, charcoal kebabs, and Friday belly dancing

The best Middle Eastern food in Montgomery County and the room most likely to surprise somebody who came to Conroe expecting catfish and barbecue. The kitchen makes its own hummus and babaghanouj, runs grilled kebabs and lamb through a full mezze menu, and keeps a bar with arak alongside the wine list.

It also runs the liveliest week of anything here. Belly dancing Friday and Saturday nights at 8, live music Thursday evenings, happy hour all day Monday and most weekday afternoons, and half-price wine bottles midweek. The restaurant describes its own position as where Lake Conroe meets the Middle East, which is a fair summary of both the menu and the clientele.

Go-to order or tip: Two phone numbers circulate for this restaurant. The one on its own site is (936) 286-6070. Directory listings and the chamber give (936) 494-0298, which also reaches it.

Hours
Open daily from 11 a.m., to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Honor Cafe

North Thompson Street, downtown · $

Known for All-day breakfast in a room that doubles as a veterans memorial

Chris and Mandi Sadler opened this in July 2020. Chris is a US Marine Corps veteran and a former Houston-area law enforcement officer, and the cafe is half diner and half military museum, with walls of memorabilia donated by customers and photographs of veterans arranged under the flag of each branch. The Legacy of Patriots programme picks a veteran each month, serves their favourite meals, and gives a share of proceeds to a charity they choose.

None of which would matter if the food were bad, and it is not. Breakfast runs all day, and the lunch side is a cut above a standard diner, with sandwiches, burgers, seafood and salads cooked to order. CBS Mornings came to film it, which is more national attention than any other restaurant in this town has had.

Go-to order or tip: Friday is the only night it serves dinner. Every other day it closes at 2 p.m., so this is a breakfast and lunch decision.

Hours
Monday to Thursday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pacific Yard House

Metcalf Street, downtown by the railroad · $$

Known for A 117-year-old building, a big patio, and live music Thursday to Saturday

An old icehouse across from the railroad tracks, converted and opened in September 2017, and the place downtown Conroe goes to drink outside. The building is the draw, a 117-year-old Texas structure by the restaurant's own count, with a large dining room, a proper bar and a covered patio.

The kitchen calls itself an upscale roadhouse and cooks to that: appetizers, sandwiches, salads, steaks, seafood and barbecue. It is solid rather than exciting, and the reason to come is the room and the music, which runs Thursday through Saturday nights with happy hour Monday to Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. A second location trades in Onalaska on Lake Livingston.

Go-to order or tip: Sit on the patio and time it for a train. Weekend service starts at 8 a.m., which makes it the earliest patio breakfast downtown.

Hours
Open daily, from 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and 11 a.m. on weekdays, to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday

McKenzie's Barbeque & Burgers

North Frazier Street, Highway 105 corridor · $

Known for Slow-cooked Texas barbecue, onion rings, and a 6.30 a.m. opening

The McKenzie family opened the Conroe store in the mid 1990s and it has been the county's default barbecue counter since, with Darin and Colin McKenzie both listed as owners in the Conroe chamber of commerce directory. The Conroe Convention and Visitors Bureau credits it with winning Best Barbeque of Montgomery County fifteen years in a row, which is the CVB's count rather than ours, and it is the only barbecue claim in this town that anybody bothers to make.

It is a family counter rather than a destination smokehouse, and it is honest about that. Chopped beef, ribs and sausage on plates and sandwiches, burgers for the half of the family that did not want barbecue, onion rings that people order specifically, and a catering operation that feeds a good share of Montgomery County's office lunches. Open from 6.30 a.m. Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday.

Go-to order or tip: If you want brisket, call ahead and ask what is on. A counter that opens at 6.30 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. is not holding the same meat all day.

Hours
Monday through Saturday, breakfast through dinner. Closed Sunday.

Joe's Italian Restaurant

North Frazier Street · $$

Known for Family-run red-sauce Italian and the pizza that comes with it

A family-owned and operated Italian room on North Frazier that gets named more often by locals than by any guide, which is usually the sign of a place worth finding. Pizza and the standard red-sauce repertoire, cooked properly and priced for a family rather than an occasion.

There is nothing novel here and that is the appeal. It is the restaurant in Conroe that a table of six can walk into on a Tuesday without a plan, and the kitchen will not have run out of anything. Closed Monday, open 11 to 9 the rest of the week.

Go-to order or tip: Takeaway and delivery both run, which makes this the best option in town for feeding people who are not going out.

Hours
Tuesday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Closed Monday.

Carmelita's Restaurant

West Davis Street, downtown · $

Known for Tamales, a weekday lunch buffet, and breakfast from 8 a.m.

A small Mexican room in downtown Conroe, a fixture for about two decades, that fills at noon with people from the courthouse and the county offices a block away. The lunch buffet is what most of them come for. Tamales are the thing to order if you are only ordering one thing.

Breakfast starts at 8 a.m. on weekdays, which is worth knowing because almost nothing else downtown serves Mexican breakfast at all. The catch is the schedule: it shuts at 3 p.m. and does not open Saturday or Sunday, so this is a working-week restaurant.

Go-to order or tip: Go before noon or after one. The courthouse lunch rush is real in a room this size.

Hours
Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

Pie in the Sky Pie Co.

North Loop 336 West · $$

Known for Pies baked fresh daily, and the comfort food served around them

Trading since 2005, and the only restaurant in Conroe people drive in from out of county specifically to visit. The pie case runs apple streusel, cherry streusel, chocolate cream and southern pecan, baked fresh each day, with cake balls alongside. The company ships pies nationwide, which tells you where the business actually is.

It is a full restaurant and not just a bakery, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch out on North Loop 336, and the comfort food holds up on its own. But order the pie. Anybody who eats here and leaves without pie has made a mistake.

Go-to order or tip: Whole pies need ordering ahead at holidays, particularly Thanksgiving week, when the case sells out early in the day.

Hours
Open daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

How did we pick these?

We started from the Conroe Convention and Visitors Bureau's own top ten list rather than a review aggregator, because a tourism board names the restaurants a town is proud of and a review site names whoever bought ads. Then we checked every candidate against a page the business itself controls, and against Community Impact, the Montgomery County local paper, for anything about openings, ownership or closures.

That second check changed the list. One of the CVB's own ten has been closed for seven years, and we cut it. Where a business and a directory disagreed, we printed what the business publishes and said so on the card, which is why the MEZZE#1 listing above carries both of its phone numbers. Where no source we trusted gave a time, we wrote the pattern instead.

There are no partners, clients or sponsored listings in this article. new-post.js matched nothing for Conroe, nothing was pre-filled, and nothing was cut or promoted because of a relationship. Nobody paid for a position here.

What closed that Conroe guides still list?

Red Onion Company on the Square at 330 N. Main Street closed on December 11, 2018. Owner Joey Ashton moved the business to custom catering out of Montgomery, and BeanPunk Coffee took over the storefront. Visit Conroe's own top ten restaurants post still lists it, chicken fried steak and all, which is how an eight-year-old recommendation ends up in a 2026 search result.

The Corner Pub at 302 N. Main is open, and we left it off the ranked list rather than cut it. It is a bar that serves deli food from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. and closes Sunday, with live blues, open mic nights and comedy. Worth your evening, not your dinner reservation.

If a guide tells you What is actually at that address in October 2026
Red Onion Company, 330 N Main St BeanPunk Coffee. The restaurant closed in December 2018.
The Corner Pub, 302 N Main St Open, but a 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. bar rather than a restaurant

What should you know before you go?

Conroe splits cleanly in two, and knowing which half you are in saves a drive. Historic downtown, around North Main and Simonton, holds The Red Brick Tavern, Pacific Yard House, Honor Cafe and Carmelita's inside a few walkable blocks, along with the Crighton and Owen theatres. Grand Central Park, off Interstate 45 about two miles south, holds Conroux and MEZZE#1 in a new development that feels like a different town. Highway 105 west takes you to Vernon's.

The scheduling trap here is closing time, not opening time. Four of these ten shut in the early afternoon or skip whole days.

Restaurant The scheduling catch
Carmelita's Closes 3 p.m., shut Saturday and Sunday
Honor Cafe Closes 2 p.m. every day except Friday
McKenzie's Barbeque Closed Sunday
Joe's Italian Closed Monday
Conroux No dinner service Sunday or Monday
The Red Brick Tavern Open 7 a.m. to late, seven days

Prices are low across the board. Conroux is the only restaurant here where two people can spend more than a hundred dollars without trying, and Carmelita's, Honor Cafe and McKenzie's will all feed two for under thirty. Parking is free everywhere, including downtown.

What should you do next?

Make it a downtown evening. Park once on North Main, eat at The Red Brick Tavern, and see whatever the Crighton has on. If you are coming up from Houston for lunch instead, Vernon's Kuntry Katfish out on Highway 105 is the meal you cannot get in the city, and Pie in the Sky on North Loop 336 is on your way back to the interstate.

For the rest of the town, our Conroe city guide collects everything we publish here, and the best restaurants in Texas city by city covers the state. If you are heading further east along the Gulf Coast, the best restaurants in Beaumont is the next city worth stopping in, and the best things to do in Galveston is the weekend at the end of the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and it is the best reason to eat in Conroe rather than drive to The Woodlands. The Red Brick Tavern on Simonton, Honor Cafe on North Thompson, Carmelita's on West Davis, Pacific Yard House on Metcalf and The Corner Pub on North Main all sit within a few blocks of the Crighton and Owen theatres. Parking downtown is free and easy.

It is the Houston invention of cooking crawfish and Gulf seafood with Vietnamese aromatics, garlic butter and lemongrass, developed by Vietnamese families along the upper Texas coast. Conroux at the Hyatt Regency is the restaurant in Conroe doing it deliberately, under a chef who came in from the Hyatt group rather than from the neighbourhood.

Fewer than you would expect. The Red Brick Tavern, Vernon's Kuntry Katfish, MEZZE#1, Pacific Yard House and Pie in the Sky all open Sunday, and Honor Cafe opens from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. McKenzie's, Carmelita's and Joe's are closed, and Conroux serves no Sunday dinner.

Conroe sits on Interstate 45 about forty miles north of downtown Houston and roughly ten miles north of The Woodlands, which puts it within a lunch trip of both. Lake Conroe is about ten miles west of downtown Conroe on Highway 105.

There is, and it sits apart from the restaurants. Southern Star Brewing on North Frazier was the first craft brewery in Texas to can its own beer and runs a taproom and biergarten on a wooded property with food trucks. B52 Brewing on Milroy Lane and Copperhead Brewery downtown are the other two.
