The Short Answer

Historic Downtown Bryan is the best thing to do in Bryan, a 104 property district listed on the National Register in February 2026 with theatres, a brewery and a hat shop inside six walkable blocks. Messina Hof has poured Texas wine since 1977, and Aggieland Safari is the drive you do with kids.

Historic Downtown Bryan

North Main Street · $

Known for A walkable historic district that holds most of this list inside six blocks

Downtown Bryan is the reason to come to Bryan rather than stay in College Station. The National Park Service added the district to the National Register of Historic Places on February 19, 2026, covering 104 properties, and the City of Bryan names the Carnegie History Center, the LaSalle Hotel and the Queen Theatre among its landmarks. It is also a Texas Cultural District.

What that means on the ground is that four other entries on this list are within a few minutes' walk of each other. The Queen and the Palace face each other on South Main, Catalena Hatters is two blocks north, and Blackwater Draw anchors the north end at 701. You can park once and do the whole thing on foot.

Go-to order or tip: Come on the first Friday of the month. The street closes to traffic, the galleries and shops stay open late, and the Palace puts on a free concert.

Hours
Shops keep daytime hours, bars and theatres run late, and First Friday closes the street

Messina Hof Winery and Resort

Old Reliance Road, northeast of town · $$

Known for Texas wine since 1977, with a tasting room, a restaurant and a bed and breakfast on one estate

Messina Hof has been making wine in Bryan since 1977, which makes it one of the older continuously running wineries in Texas and by far the biggest visitor draw in Brazos County that is not attached to the university. The estate runs a tasting room and wine bar with six different tasting flights, wine on tap, and a light bites menu, plus behind the scenes tour and tasting experiences through the production side.

Two other things share the property. The Vintage House is a full restaurant, and the Villa is a bed and breakfast, so this is the one stop on the list that can absorb an entire evening or an entire weekend without you moving the car.

Go-to order or tip: Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 with select glasses at five dollars, which is the cheapest way to try the range before you commit to a flight.

Hours
Open daily, opening midday Wednesday through Sunday and mid afternoon Monday and Tuesday

Aggieland Safari

FM 974, northeast of Bryan · $$

Known for A drive-thru safari across more than 250 acres, plus a walk-through adventure zoo

Aggieland Safari is a drive-thru animal park on FM 974 northeast of town. The park advertises more than 300 animals over more than 250 acres and reckons the drive alone at 45 minutes or more. General admission also covers the Adventure Zoo, a walk-through section with more than 50 species and educational exhibits.

Animal encounters and feeding experiences cost extra and are booked separately. Pets are not allowed anywhere on site, which matters if you drove in with the dog, because there is nowhere to leave one.

Go-to order or tip: Closing times drift with the season and the park stops admitting cars an hour before the gate closes, so check the day you are going rather than trusting a search result.

Hours
Closed Tuesday and Wednesday, open daytime hours the rest of the week with last entry an hour before closing

The Queen Theatre

South Main Street, Downtown Bryan · $$

Known for A 1939 Main Street movie house restored to first run films, with a bar on the upper floors

The Queen opened in 1939, ran by the Schulman family, and closed in the 1970s when downtown emptied out. The community restored it, it reopened as an event space and classic film house from 2018 until the pandemic, the City of Bryan took ownership in 2021, and the Schulman family is running it again through their entertainment company. It shows first run films on reserved seating today.

The building is the only Streamline Moderne front on Main Street, and the programming leans on that: alongside new releases it runs older titles on the big screen. The Crown Bar occupies the third and fourth floors. The Palace, its sister venue, is directly across at 105 South Main.

Go-to order or tip: Buy for the older titles early. The revival screenings sell better than the first run shows on the same weekend.

Hours
Showtimes run afternoon through late evening, and the schedule changes weekly

Lake Bryan

Sandy Point Road, west of town · $

Known for More than 20 miles of trail and the only public boat ramp in Brazos County

Lake Bryan is owned and run by Bryan Texas Utilities, and it is the outdoor answer in a county that does not have a state park. Entry is five dollars a person, free for children 10 and under, or 75 dollars for an annual pass. Inside there are more than 20 miles of hiking, biking and running trail, fishing, camping with electric and water sites, and the only public boat ramp in the county.

There is a bar and grill on the water with live music, so this works as an evening as well as a morning. It is about 15 minutes from downtown.

Go-to order or tip: Do not count on renting a kayak or paddleboard. Rentals have been listed as closed, so bring your own or call ahead.

Hours
Open every day of the year, 9am to 8pm December through February and 9am to 10pm March through November

Blackwater Draw Brewing Co.

North end of Downtown Bryan · $$

Known for Beer brewed on site at the top of Main Street, with a taproom kitchen behind it

Blackwater Draw is the independent brewery in downtown Bryan, and the taproom at 701 North Main is where a lot of the neighborhood ends up. The house beers include Hazy Lady, a juicy IPA, Horns Down, a pale lager, and Contract Killer, a coffee porter. The kitchen runs burgers and sandwiches rather than leaving you to a food truck, though a truck often parks up as well.

Published hours differ between the brewery's own site and the Destination Bryan listing, with the taproom generally opening early afternoon Wednesday through Sunday and later on Tuesday. Check before an early arrival.

Go-to order or tip: On First Fridays the taproom stays open to midnight, which is later than anything else at that end of Main Street.

Hours
Closed Monday, then afternoons into the evening Tuesday through Sunday and later on Friday and Saturday

Known for A Discovery Room of live reptiles and an 1856 log house in the park behind it

This is a small regional natural history museum and it is better than its size suggests. The Discovery Room holds live snakes, turtles, fish, tarantulas and scorpions alongside taxidermy and minerals, and the permanent galleries cover the natural and cultural history of the Brazos Valley.

Behind the building sits Boonville Heritage Park, an 11.29 acre site with an original 1856 log house on it. Through October 24, 2026 the museum is also running a special exhibit on the Brazos river itself.

Go-to order or tip: Go on a Saturday morning and do the park behind the museum as well. Most visitors miss it because the entrance is round the back.

Hours
Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm, closed Sunday and Monday

Catalena Hatters

North Main Street, Downtown Bryan · $$$

Known for Custom felt and straw hats made by hand on Main Street since 1983

Catalena Hatters has been making custom hats at 203 North Main since 1983, still family owned and operated. Felt hats are made by hand by their own craftsmen using century old tools and methods, in whatever crown and brim you want, from a Gus to a Cattleman to a fedora. They also restore hats people bring in.

Walking in without an order is fine and worth doing. It is a working shop rather than a showroom, and watching a hat get shaped is the point even if you leave with nothing.

Go-to order or tip: A custom felt hat is a commitment of money and time. If you want one for a specific date, start the conversation months out, not the week before.

Hours
Monday through Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm, closed Sunday

Known for Twelve hands-on exhibits in the Lake Walk development north of the city

Twelve interactive exhibits aimed squarely at younger children, sitting inside the Lake Walk development rather than downtown. It is the indoor option on a hot or wet day, and it pairs with the walking paths, the overlook tower and the weekly market that share the same development.

It is small. Treat it as ninety minutes with a toddler rather than an afternoon with a ten year old, and it delivers.

Go-to order or tip: Lake Walk runs a market and outdoor programming on its lawn. Check what is on there the same day and make one trip of it.

Hours
Tuesday through Saturday during the day and Sunday afternoons, closed Monday

How did we pick these?

We started from the Destination Bryan attraction listings, then checked every candidate against the business's own site for address, phone and current operating pattern, and looked for a second source outside the tourism board where one existed. The City of Bryan confirmed the National Register listing and the date. Destination Bryan carries the Queen Theatre's ownership history, which the theatre's own ticketing site backs up.

There are no partners, clients or sponsored entries on this list. Nothing was pre-filled into the file, and nobody paid to be here.

Two things we deliberately left out. Topgolf is in Bryan and it is busy, but a Topgolf in Bryan is the same Topgolf as anywhere else, and this list is for the things you cannot do at home. We also kept Christopher's World Grille and the restaurants of Downtown Bryan out of the ranked list rather than padding it with dinner, because they belong in a restaurants article and not this one.

Where the sources disagreed we said so rather than picking a side. Blackwater Draw's own hours and its Destination Bryan listing do not match, and Aggieland Safari publishes different closing times by season, so both cards describe the pattern and tell you to check.

What should you know before you go?

Bryan is compact, and the split that matters is downtown against everything else. Four of these are walkable from one another. The rest need the car.

Place Cost Best for Closed
Historic Downtown Bryan Free An evening on foot Never, but First Friday is the night
Messina Hof $$ A long afternoon Open daily
Aggieland Safari $$ Kids, and the drive Tuesday and Wednesday
The Queen Theatre $$ A film in a 1939 room Varies by week
Lake Bryan $5 a head Trails and water Open 365 days
Blackwater Draw $$ Late downtown Monday
Natural History Museum $ A rainy morning Sunday and Monday
Catalena Hatters $$$ A hat that lasts Sunday
Children's Museum $ Under sevens Monday

Monday is the weak day. The brewery, the children's museum and the natural history museum are all shut, which leaves downtown, Messina Hof and Lake Bryan. Tuesday and Wednesday take Aggieland Safari off the board. If you only have one day and you can choose it, choose a Friday and take First Friday as the evening.

Parking downtown is free and on the street, and it fills on First Friday and on Texas A&M home game weekends. Everything outside downtown has its own lot.

What about College Station?

They are one metro with two downtowns and the division is clean. College Station has the university, the hotels and the game day crowd. Bryan has the older buildings, the independent shops and the things on this list. The drive between them takes about ten minutes on Texas Avenue.

The sensible pattern for a university weekend is to sleep in College Station, eat one dinner in Bryan, and give Saturday morning to Lake Bryan or the safari before the crowd wakes up. Our ranking of the College Station restaurant scene covers the other side of that trip.

What should you do next?

Pick your day around First Friday if you can, and book nothing else. Downtown, the Queen and the brewery all take walk-ins, and the only thing on this list that rewards booking in advance is a custom hat.

Everything else we have published on the city sits on the Bryan city hub. If you are working through Texas by town, the things to do category has every city we have ranked, and Waco is the next stop north on the same kind of trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and it is ten minutes up Texas Avenue. College Station has the campus, the hotels and the chains. Bryan has the historic downtown, the winery and the chef-owned restaurants in older buildings. Most people staying for a university weekend give Bryan one evening and wish they had given it two.

On the first Friday of every month Main Street closes to traffic and the downtown district runs a free evening of art, shopping and live performance. The Palace Theater puts on a free concert, galleries and shops stay open late, and the bars and the brewery run later than usual.

Bryan. Despite the name it sits at 18075 FM 974 northeast of Bryan, in the 77808 zip code, about 20 minutes from downtown. It is closed Tuesday and Wednesday and stops admitting cars an hour before the gate closes.

Yes. Entry is five dollars per person for the day, children 10 and under are free, and an annual pass is 75 dollars. That covers the trails, the fishing, the boat ramp and the day use areas. Camping is booked and paid separately.

Aggieland Safari and the Children's Museum of the Brazos Valley are the two built for them, and the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History has a live animal Discovery Room that holds most ages. Lake Bryan covers the outdoor half of a weekend for five dollars a head.
