The Short Answer

Tommy's Bar-B-Que at 6282 US-59 North is the best restaurant in Atlanta, Texas, a lunch only barbecue house open Wednesday through Sunday that rates higher across every review platform than anywhere else in town. The Rabbit Patch downtown is the best burger, and Rickey's Ribshack is the best ribs, open only Thursday to Saturday.

Tommy's Bar-B-Que

US-59 north of town · $$

Known for Brisket, ribs and sausage, served until the early afternoon and no later

The highest rated restaurant in Atlanta on every platform we checked, and not narrowly. Yelp, Tripadvisor and MenuPix all put it between 4.6 and 4.7, which is unusual agreement for a small town restaurant where the aggregators normally contradict each other. Its own page describes it as serving barbecue since 1994. Reviewers consistently name the brisket, the ribs, the fried chicken and the coconut pie.

It is first because it is the one place here where the quality and the consensus point the same direction. The catch is the clock. This is a lunch operation that closes at three, five days a week, so it cannot be a dinner plan. One outlying listing publishes a 7am to 2.30pm Tuesday to Saturday schedule, which contradicts the restaurant's own page, so go with Wednesday to Sunday and call if you are driving far.

Go-to order or tip: Get there before one. It closes at three and a barbecue house that closes at three is usually out of the best cuts well before it locks the door.

Hours
Wednesday to Sunday 10.30am to 3pm, closed Monday and Tuesday

The Rabbit Patch

Downtown, East Hiram Street · $

Known for Burgers in a restored downtown storefront

A burger counter in a downtown building on East Hiram, and the only restaurant in Atlanta that appears on both the city tourism office's list and the Cass County chamber directory under a name people actually use for it. Burgers, sandwiches and wraps are the whole idea. Reviewers keep returning to the mushroom Swiss burger, the patty melt and the sweet potato fries.

Second because it is the best thing in Atlanta you can get at six in the evening on a weekday, which Tommy's and Rickey's cannot offer. Prices in older listings run around eight to nine dollars for a burger combo, though those are a few years old now and we would not hold the restaurant to them.

Go-to order or tip: It is two doors from The Sweet Spot on the same block, so a burger and then ice cream is a single walk without moving the car.

Hours
Monday to Friday 11am to 7pm. Sources disagree on Saturday, with some listing a short lunch window and others closed, so call before a weekend visit

Rickey's Ribshack BBQ

West Main Street · $$

Known for Ribs, three days a week

A three day a week rib operation on West Main, and the second real barbecue house in a town of about 6,000 people, which tells you something about Cass County. Its own site and the Atlanta tourism office both give the West Main address and the (903) 799-7475 number, and the Thursday to Saturday schedule is the one point every listing agrees on.

Be careful with directory listings for this one. Several put Rickey's at 706 Loop 59 with a different phone number, which looks like an old address that never got cleaned up. The business's own site says West Main, so go there. A Tripadvisor reviewer puts it plainly, that they say they are open Thursday to Saturday and you should call first.

Go-to order or tip: Thursday is the quietest of its three days. Call before you leave either way, because a three day week and a 6pm close leaves very little margin.

Hours
Thursday to Saturday 10.30am to 6pm, closed Sunday through Wednesday

Uncle Juan's

Downtown, East Main Street · $$

Known for The Mexican restaurant locals name first, open seven days

On the city tourism list, in the Cass County chamber directory, and with a schedule its own site, Apple Maps and the aggregators all state the same way, which makes it the best verified set of hours of any restaurant in Atlanta. A Tripadvisor reviewer calls it their go to spot in Atlanta for Mexican food, and it is the one Mexican restaurant in town whose location we could pin without contradiction.

Fourth because it is the most dependable restaurant on this list rather than the most exciting. Seven days a week, 11am to 9pm on six of them, downtown on East Main. When the two barbecue houses are shut and it is Tuesday evening, this is where you go.

Go-to order or tip: Sunday closes at three, which is the one day the pattern breaks. Every other day it is open until nine.

Hours
Monday to Saturday 11am to 9pm, Sunday 11am to 3pm

Luigi's Italian Restaurant

North East Street, a block off downtown · $$

Known for The only sit down Italian restaurant in Cass County, and it is bring your own bottle

The only Italian restaurant in town, on the Atlanta tourism office's list, with the kind of menu a small town Italian place has. Reviewers point at the spaghetti and meatballs with the works and the house salad. It is bring your own bottle, which several reviewers list as the reason they picked it for a group.

We are ranking it fifth and being honest about why. The ratings split harder here than anywhere else in Atlanta. Restaurant Guru and Birdeye both sit around 4.5 to 4.6 across several hundred reviews, while Yelp sits at 3.6 across 30. That is a real disagreement rather than a rounding difference, so go in expecting a competent small town Italian dinner and not more than that.

Go-to order or tip: Bring your own wine. There is no corkage policy published anywhere, so ask when you book a table for a group.

Hours
Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 9pm, closed Monday. One listing shows a Tuesday closure instead, so phone if Tuesday is your only option

Jack's Fine Food

North Louise Street · $

Known for The cheapest proper meal in town, and the longest hours

The longest hours in Atlanta and the lowest prices, which are the two things that matter at eight on a Sunday evening when everything else on this list is closed. The online ordering menu is live and priced, which is the clearest possible evidence a small town restaurant is actually operating. A cheeseburger runs $6.89, a patty melt $6.35, a chili burger $8.09 and a chili cheeseburger $8.59.

A Roadtrippers reviewer calls the burgers the best in town, which we would put behind The Rabbit Patch, but the point stands that this is a real burger and not a holding pen. Online orders are pickup only. Two phone numbers circulate, and (903) 796-2871 is the one the tourism office, Yellow Pages and Yelp all carry.

Go-to order or tip: Order online for pickup if you are passing through. It is the only restaurant in Atlanta with a working online menu and it saves you guessing at the counter.

Hours
Daily 10am to 9pm, with one listing showing an 11am open, so call if you are going early

The Sweet Spot

Downtown, East Hiram Street · $

Known for Blue Bell by the scoop and espresso from six in the morning

Twenty four varieties of Blue Bell, a full espresso menu, and freshly baked cookies, cake pops, chocolate dipped treats and pudding cups. It is the only place in Atlanta serving coffee at six in the morning and the only place serving anything at eight in the evening on a Thursday, which makes it the two ends of the day that no restaurant here covers.

It is listed by the Atlanta Downtown Merchants Association, which is a local trade body rather than a directory, and that listing plus Yelp agree on the unusual schedule. Closed Wednesday and Sunday is the part people get caught by.

Go-to order or tip: The Wednesday and Sunday closures are real and they are the days you would most expect an ice cream shop to be open. Check the day before you promise it to children.

Hours
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 6am to 8pm, Saturday 11am to 8pm, closed Wednesday and Sunday

Potato Patch

US-59 at the south edge of town · $

Known for Loaded baked potatoes and a drive through, now with a bubble tea counter

A counter service spot on the highway doing loaded baked potatoes, with dine in, takeaway, a drive through and delivery. Several current listings carry it as Potato Patch Eden Bubble Tea, so a bubble tea menu has been added at some point, which is not a combination you expect in Cass County and is probably the most interesting thing happening on US-59.

Last on the list for a specific reason. Two sources give phone numbers one digit apart, (903) 650-0090 on the city tourism office's own page and 903-650-0990 on a menu aggregator, and we will not print a number we cannot settle. The address is consistent everywhere, so navigate to 797 US-59 and read the door.

Go-to order or tip: The drive through makes it the fastest food in Atlanta that is not a national chain. Treat the hours as approximate and have Jack's as the backup.

Hours
Roughly Monday to Saturday 11am to 9pm, closed Sunday. Listings disagree on which of Sunday and Monday is the closed day, so call ahead

How did we pick these?

Two directories did most of the work. The Atlanta tourism office publishes a food and drink list of 29 businesses with addresses and phone numbers, and the Cass County Chamber of Commerce publishes a separate dining directory by city. Where a restaurant appeared on both, we had two independent local sources before we looked at a single review. Where it appeared on only one, we went looking for the business itself.

Then we stripped out the chains. Burger King, McDonald's, Sonic, Subway, Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Domino's, Dairy Queen, Chicken Express and Whataburger are all in Atlanta and none of them belong on a list like this. Two nutrition shops and a grocery store came off for the same reason.

Three independents got cut for cause, which is the part worth reading. Come and Take It Cafe on East Main and Roux-Ga-Roux Seafood on North East Street are both still in the Cass County chamber directory, and Come and Take It's own website still publishes weekday hours. Recent listings on Yelp mark both closed, and MapQuest lists Come and Take It as permanently closed. A chamber directory is slow to update, so we trusted the more recent signal and left both off. Amigo Juan is on both local directories and is clearly operating, but three sources give it three different addresses, 601 US-59, 611 Loop 59 and 605 Loop 59, and its own site was down every time we tried it. We will not send you to an address we cannot settle, so it comes back when we can confirm it.

Catfish King on US-59 is open and verifiable but it is a regional chain and its ratings run 3.5 to 3.8, so it did not earn a spot over the eight above it.

No partner, client or sponsored listing appears on this article. Nothing in Atlanta or Cass County matched our client file, so this is a straight editorial list.

What should you know before you go?

Atlanta's real problem is not quality, it is hours. Three of the eight restaurants here are closed more days a week than they are open, and the two best ones both stop serving in the afternoon.

Restaurant Days open Last service Best for
Tommy's Bar-B-Que Wednesday to Sunday 3pm The best food in town
The Rabbit Patch Monday to Friday 7pm Burgers, weekday dinner
Rickey's Ribshack Thursday to Saturday 6pm Ribs
Uncle Juan's Seven days 9pm, 3pm Sunday The dependable one
Luigi's Tuesday to Sunday 9pm Italian, bring your own bottle
Jack's Fine Food Seven days 9pm Cheap, late, open Sunday
The Sweet Spot Closed Wednesday and Sunday 8pm Coffee at 6am, Blue Bell
Potato Patch Roughly Monday to Saturday 9pm Drive through

If you are passing through on a Monday or Tuesday, your real options are Uncle Juan's, Jack's and The Rabbit Patch, and that is it. If you are passing through at lunch on a Thursday, you can have the two best meals in Cass County in one day.

Four of the eight are within two blocks of each other downtown on East Main and East Hiram, which is the one part of town you can do on foot. The rest are strung along US-59 and Loop 59 and need a car.

Be skeptical of directory listings here. We found wrong addresses, duplicate listings for closed locations, and phone numbers that differ by a digit. Call before you drive more than twenty minutes.

Is Atlanta worth stopping for on the way to Texarkana?

Yes, if you time it. Atlanta sits about 25 miles southwest of Texarkana on US-59, which makes it a genuine lunch stop rather than a detour, and Tommy's is better than most of what you will find at the end of the drive. Atlanta State Park on Wright Patman Lake is a few minutes northwest if you want to walk afterwards.

For the bigger town up the road, see the best restaurants in Texarkana and the best barbecue in Texarkana. If you are touring the corner of the state rather than driving through it, the best small towns in Northeast Texas to visit covers the route. The Atlanta city guide and the restaurants category hold the rest.

What should you do next?

Go on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday, because that is the only window when all eight of these are open on the same day. Have lunch at Tommy's before one, walk East Main and East Hiram in the afternoon, and finish with ice cream at The Sweet Spot before eight.

If you are there on a Monday, go to The Rabbit Patch and get the patty melt. If it is late and everything is shut, Jack's is open until nine and a $6.89 cheeseburger is a perfectly good answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

The city tourism office lists 29 food and drink businesses, but more than half of those are national fast food chains, convenience stores or nutrition shops. We counted roughly a dozen independent sit down or counter service restaurants, and eight of those survived verification for this list.

Jack's Fine Food is open daily until 9pm and Uncle Juan's opens Sunday 11am to 3pm. Tommy's Bar-B-Que is open Sunday until 3pm. Rickey's Ribshack, The Sweet Spot and Potato Patch are all closed Sunday, and Luigi's is open Sunday but closed Monday.

Tommy's Bar-B-Que on US-59 north, which rates between 4.6 and 4.7 across Yelp, Tripadvisor and MenuPix and is open Wednesday to Sunday until 3pm. Rickey's Ribshack on West Main is the better choice specifically for ribs, but it only opens Thursday to Saturday until 6pm.

No. Atlanta, Texas is a town of about 6,000 people in Cass County in the far northeast corner of the state, roughly 25 miles southwest of Texarkana. It was established in 1871. None of the restaurants on this list are in Georgia.

Come and Take It Cafe at 110 East Main Street and Roux-Ga-Roux Seafood at 301 North East Street both still appear on local directories, including the Cass County chamber listing, but recent review platform listings mark both as closed. We left both off this list.

Atlanta State Park sits on Wright Patman Lake just northwest of town, with a boat ramp, a day use area and hiking trails including Bobo's Ferry Trail and the Terrace Trail. Downtown Atlanta has a small historic commercial district on East Main and East Hiram streets, which is where four of the eight restaurants here are.
