The Best Restaurants in Abilene, Texas

The Beehive is the restaurant Abilene sends people to. Steaks go on an open pit over a mesquite fire rather than a flat-top, which is what gives the ribeye its charred crust, and the chicken fried steak is ordered about as often as the beef. A full saloon runs alongside the dining room in a downtown building fitted out to look like the family's original place.

That original was in Albany, about 35 miles northeast, where the Esfandiary brothers opened in 1982 and drew statewide write-ups for years. The Albany saloon has since closed, citing the economy, which leaves the Abilene location carrying the name. It is a barn-styled room off South 11th rather than a downtown destination, with the space and the parking to take a large party on short notice.

It sits on South Leggett rather than anywhere scenic, which is the trade. Go for the food.
